Champagne Ruinart, established by Nicolas Ruinart in 1729, was the first Champagne house in the world. The maison’s easily recognisable bottles hark back to the eighteenth century, as does the tradition of aging wines in their medieval chalk cellars, Les Crayéres, which are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These ethereal vaults sit 40 meters beneath the city of Reims and stretch eight kilometers long, providing a naturally cool and dark environment for storing wine.
Chalk is key to growing quality Chardonnay, the one white grape of the traditional three used to make Champagne. Ruinart is renowned for its clear-bottled Blanc de Blancs, which blends fruit from a variety of chalk-rich Premier Cru soils across the region. The maison practices sustainability, including using a lightweight, recyclable ‘Second Skin’ instead of gift boxes.
3. Champagne Taittinger

Taittinger is one of the few grand Champagne houses that remains family-run and welcomes guests into its cellars. Visitors can take a walk through history at the Louis Quinze château in Pierry, near Epernay, and explore the Gallo-Roman cellars in the Champagne capital of Reims. The Champagne house produces an archetypal range of white and rosé Champagnes (vintage and non-vintage), all imbued with a deep heritage.
The Château de la Marquetterie was built in 1734 and once belonged to French author Jacques Cazotte, who entertained the likes of Voltaire and André Chénier during harvest season. It was acquired by Pierre Taittinger in the 1930s, and today, his great-granddaughter Vitalie and her brother Clovis run the estate.
4. Champagne Billecart-Salmon

Billecart-Salmon, founded in 1818 by newlyweds Nicolas François Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon, is a Champagne house that has been passed down to the seventh generation, with Mathieu Billecart-Salmon at the helm today. The pristine garden surrounding the main house in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, redesigned in the 1920s, is a point of pride for the family. Still, there is plenty to explore underground, in the vineyards, and the prestigious enclosed “Clos Saint Hilaire,” a one-hectare plot planted solely to Pinot Noir, producing its own Blanc de Noirs cuvée, which epitomizes Billecart-Salmon’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The house hopes to attain certification for 100% of its land by 2025.
Guided tours of the Champagne house last two and a half hours, including visits to the barrel cellars, the chalk cellars where the bottles are aged, and tasting of three wines. The estate covers 100 hectares, with fruit acquired from a broader range of 40 crus, mostly around Epernay. The grapes are dealt with according to their variety and the village they come from, then fermented slowly at low temperatures to ensure delicacy of flavor and nuance.
5. Champagne Drappier

The family tree of the Drappier family has its roots in the 17th century, with the birth of Rémy Drappier in 1604 who became a draper in Reims. It was not until 1808 that one of the ancestors of the house, François, settled in Urville and began to exploit a vineyard of a few hectares. Since 2016, Michel and his wife Sylvie, have been joined by the eighth generation of the Drappier family. Charline, born in 1989, is gradually taking charge of marketing, while her brother Hugo, born in 1991, is responsible for viticulture and oenology.
The family vineyard now covers 62 hectares, not counting the association contracts. Essentially located in the commune of Urville, the vineyard of the house retains the strong identity of the district of Bar-sur-Aube, marked by the influence of Pinot Noir. This grape variety reigns supreme, and represents 70% of the estate, completed by Pinot Meunier at a rate of 15%, Chardonnay 9%, and 6% of ancient grape varieties. This very local vineyard has allowed the family to reinforce its sustainable viticulture methods, with the “Agriculture Biologique” certification.
6. Laherte Frères

Established by Jean-Baptiste Laherte back in 1889, the Laherte family estate embarked on a remarkable journey that continues to this day. Initially, Jean-Baptiste planted the majority of their vines in the charming village of Chavost, which would eventually evolve into Chavot. As time passed and Laherte’s viticultural legacy unfolded, the estate expanded gradually across the Champagne region, now encompassing over 11 hectares. Today, the sixth and seventh generations of the Laherte family work hand in hand, carrying forward a tradition of crafting wines that mirror their own qualities: pure, sincere, and authentic. Drawing upon their collective knowledge and concerted efforts, they strive to honor and maximize the potential of their precious familial heritage.

7. Champagne Chartogne-Taillet

In the 7th century, the villages’ wine growers, situated in Merfy, drew on the heritage of the Benedictine monks from the abbey of Saint Thierry. Generation after generation, Merfy’s wine growers, together with the abbey, shaped the viticultural landscapes of their hillsides, meticulously separating each plot according to its geological origins, soils, subsoils, etc. Names were subsequently inscribed on maps of the village, and these became the “lieu-dits,” which today nourish the roots of the vines growing there.
The traces of the wine growers in their family go back to 1490, with Nicolas Taillet, and Fiacre Taillet in 1540. By 1700, a second Fiacre Taillet, an erudite wine grower, was writing his memoirs recounting his lifework, as well as all the important events of the village, the family, and his profession. The Chartogne-Taillet family continues this tradition of writing and savoir-faire inherited from this legacy of wine growing.
8. Champagne Charles Heidsieck

Charles is a confirmed traveller and free-spirited, smooth-talking gentleman entrepreneur, focused on his champagne business. His champagnes embody his personality: emblematic and unique. At 29 years old, Charles took his destiny in hand and founded a House in his image. His audacity, adventures and the renown of his wines would make him a legend in his time. His ambitions served to guide his descendants over the centuries. In 2011, the Descours family took over the House with the aim of ensuring its international renown.
Over the past two decades – and not less than 12 times in only those 20 years – the Charles Heidsieck Cellar Masters have been awarded the prestigious title of “Best Sparkling Winemaker of the Year” at the London International Wine Challenge. 9. Champagne Marteaux Guillaume

Domaine Marteaux took root in Bonneil, on the edge of the Aisne, at the end of the 19th century. Nestled in the hollow of a cirque of hillsides, Bonneil and its arena vineyard reveal a singularly strong terroir. At the Marteaux family estate, know-how has been shaped for 5 generations. At first cooperators and then nurserymen specialized in Champagne vine plants, which allowed a massal selection, the family’s winegrowers emancipated themselves and became manipulating harvesters in 1996. Today, they continue the work begun by their ancestors, humbly and with passion, driven by a desire for perpetual evolution.
The vines enjoy the clay-limestone soils, a limestone subsoil, a microclimate sheltered from the wind and an ideal South/South-East exposure. Nature is generous. The grapes have a very good maturity of sugars on the one hand, but also of the acids composing the berries. On Bonneil, a vein of sand crosses one side of the vineyard, adding to the diversity of the local terroir and giving the wine original complex characteristics.
