Castello di Bolgheri

Bolgheri, Italy

Castello di Bolgheri, the most historic winery in the area, is nestled within the ancient walls of Bolgheri. The estate spans the final kilometer leading to the town, stretching on both sides of the iconic “Viale dei Cipressi”. With deep roots in Italian winemaking tradition, this Tuscan estate has been passed down through generations, always guided by a commitment to sustainable agriculture.

The winery at Castello di Bolgheri, built in 1796, remained under the ownership of the Della Gherardesca family for generations. Today, it is owned by the Zileri Dal Verme family through female inheritance. Since the mid-1990s, Count Federico Zileri Dal Verme has led the estate, blending innovation with a deep respect for tradition, and dedicating to crafting wines that are both refined and authentically expressive of the Bolgheri terroir.

Castello di Bolgheri’s vineyards, set at an altitude of 70 meters, are strategically located along the famed avenue of cypress trees, with rows aligned perpendicular to the Mediterranean Sea. This positioning benefits the vines with sea breezes that moderate summer heat and provide milder winter temperatures. The soil—rich in clay, sand, limestone, and pebbles—adds to the unique character of the wines, which embody the land’s complexity and elegance.

Since 1996, the estate has embraced international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, and Petit Verdot, which thrive under the Bolgheri DOC designation. Today, Castello di Bolgheri’s wines capture the soul of this celebrated region, offering drinkers a taste of Tuscany’s remarkable terroir and history in each bottl
