WIA Ambassador
Australia
Mary John, the face behind @perthwinegirl, is a wine enthusiast from Perth, Australia, who loves sharing simple, fun and inclusive forms of wine communication outside the box. She is a Latin American Aussie with local and international experience traveling to many wine regions and writing about them. Mary is also passionate about Australian wines and her wine journey is largely inspired by wine, family’s stories, history and heritage.
She wasn’t into wine before she sipped a Barossa Shiraz that took her to the childhood of aromas of Christmas black cake and the rest, as they say, is history. Mary wanted to know how the wine could taste the way it did, and why other red wines didn’t taste the same. Since then, she has been embarking on a wine journey with high hopes and an eagerness to understand more. This journey led her to the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) where she is now working towards her WSET Diploma.
.
Mary’s love of wine has taken her to the vineyards of Spain, France, Portugal, Austria, Malta, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Argentina, Chile and of course, Australia. She fell in love with the enormous story behind wine, the passion within the process of making it and the different favours there are from one winery to another.Mary believes that wine is best appreciated in the company of friends and family, but also it’s also quite divine when you’re curled up with a good book too.

As a Social Media Strategist, Mary John provides support to the wine industry through her social media channels with marketing campaigns and strategic advice for brands. Storytelling has been a skill she has had to learn to do well when it comes to communicate. There is always something to discover about wine and so she is continuing her wine education and sharing the love through her social channels.

Mary is actively promoting diversity and inclusion in the wine industry since by having a diverse wine industry accessible to everyone you keep the wine industry flourishing. Wine is a cultural symbol and has evolved over time to be a cultural complement to food and part of everyone’s lifestyle. She says that the bias in the wine industry remains relentless, sometimes it’s a tiring cycle of being stereotyped, profiled or overlooked. Therefore, we all need to feel a place of belonging and welcome. To have an improved culture, be more diverse and accessible to everybody – this is the future of the wine industry that Mary would like to see.
