Domaine Begude

Cépie, France

Domaine Begude is an award winning, organic vineyard nestling high in the foothills of the Pyrenees, in the renowned appellation of Limoux. It has been under the same family ownership since 2003 when James and Catherine Kinglake moved there to fulfil a dream. Begude’s 25 hectares of certified organic vines, benefit from the region’s long cool growing season resulting in wines that are fruit driven, well balanced and underpinned with a natural freshness and purity. They employ a very small committed team, headed by Laurent Girault, who has extensive winemaking experience in many French appellations and also further afield at Rippon Vineyard in Central Otago, New Zealand.

The growing conditions are similar to those in Burgundy and indeed, 80% of the vineyard’s production is Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The vines surround the winery, on mainly south eastern or southern facing slopes, meaning the fruit can be in the press within minutes of harvesting and in optimal condition.

Zero synthetic fertilisers, chemicals or pesticides are used. Consequently, the soil is alive and healthy with high levels of organic matter that can better hold nutrients and has a rich microbial diversity. This in turn, produces stronger vines that are better protected against pests and disease and also helps to conserve the native flora and fauna.
