Dopff Au Moulin
Alsace, France
For over 400 years, the Dopff family has dedicated themselves to the art of winemaking in the beautiful region of Alsace, France. From generation to generation, they have carried on the legacy of producing exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir and traditions of the area.
It was Julien Dopff, a true pioneer of Crémant d’Alsace and a passionate advocate for Alsatian viticulture, who brought innovation and ingenuity to the family’s winemaking journey. In his quest to create exceptional sparkling wines, he discovered the practical demonstration of the renowned “Méthode Champenoise” and decided to apply it to the wines of Alsace.

Julien Dopff’s revolutionary ideas did not stop there. In 1913, he introduced the concept of marketing wines in the iconic “flute” bottles, adding an elegant touch that would set Alsatian wines apart from the rest. Overcoming resistance and skepticism, Julien Dopff successfully proved the satisfactory conservation of bottled Alsatian wines by having them travel back and forth between Alsace and Australia. His remarkable demonstration earned him a silver medal with the mention of “for a particularly successful accomplishment” at the Strasbourg Exhibition.
Recognizing the significance of Dopff’s contribution, a decree was passed in 1972, making it mandatory to bottle Alsatian wines in their production region. Four years later, in 1976, AOC Crémant d’Alsace was born, thanks to the efforts of Pierre Dopff, bringing immense success to the region. Today, Crémant d’Alsace represents over 50% of all Crémants in the market, a testament to the enduring legacy of the Dopff family.

Etienne-Arnaud Dopff, who joined the estate in 1998, continues to uphold the family’s values and vision of producing authentic wines. Following the golden rule set by his ancestors, he ensures that all wines are vinified at the estate, either from their own production or meticulously selected contractors.
The vineyards of Dopff Alsace AOC are primarily located in the enchanting municipality of Riquewihr, situated between 250 and 380 meters of altitude. With 35 hectares of vineyards, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Blanc thrive in the cool valley with its rich clay and marl soils, imparting complexity and elegance to their range of Alsatian wines.
.
.
Dopff’s vineyards dedicated to Crémant d’Alsace are mainly found in “la Hardt” near Colmar and Riquewihr. Covering a total of 20 hectares, Chardonnay takes the lead with 55% of the plantings, accompanied by Auxerrois, Pinot Blanc, and a touch of Pinot Noir. The average age of the vines was 25 years in 2019, showcasing the experience and expertise that goes into crafting their remarkable Crémant wines.
The Dopff family’s commitment to their craft and their unwavering dedication to producing the most authentic wines has made them a renowned name in the world of winemaking. With each generation building upon the successes of the past, Dopff au Moulin continues to create wines that capture the essence of Alsace, transporting wine lovers on a journey through centuries of tradition and excellence.
