Wine Leaders' Choice

Auburn, Australia

In the picturesque Clare Valley, Bill Taylor and his sons established a vineyard on 178 hectares of fertile terra rossa soil in 1969, expertly chosen for cultivating excellent Cabernet Sauvignon. This land, once the bed of an ancient inland sea as revealed by discovered seahorse fossils, inspired the seahorse logo and the “Promised Land” moniker for one of their five wine ranges.

Despite its elevation of 350 metres above sea level, the vineyard near Auburn enjoys a Mediterranean climate—warm days and cool nights—ideal for grape growing. Over the years, the family expanded their vineyard holdings to over 500 hectares, including the Limestone Coast, from which they source grapes for the Promised Land range.

In 1995, they purchased the neighboring St. Andrews property, a historic vineyard since 1896. Here, they began producing small batches of super-premium Cabernet Sauvignon wines. These wines, handcrafted with utmost dedication and respect for the fruit, have been nationally and internationally acclaimed since their release in 1999.

Wakefield Wines’ commitment to sustainability and responsibility extends beyond wine-making. As founding members of Australia’s First Families of Wine (AFFW), they work alongside eleven other winemaking families to encourage the future of Australian wine and preserve its rich history.

Wakefield Wines is a testament to the art of winemaking—balancing sustainable practices, respect for the land’s history, and an unwavering quest for quality. Every glass of Wakefield wine represents a sip of the Taylor family’s enduring legacy.
