Château Le Grand Verdus

Sadirac, France

The roots of Grand Verdus run deep, tracing back to the 16th century when a fortified manor was built on the grounds of an ancient castle. The first known lord, Arnaud de Bonneau, presided over the estate during this era of architectural transformation. However, it was the acquisition of the castle by Claude DESCHAMPS, the esteemed architect responsible for the Stone Bridges of Bordeaux and Libourne under Napoleon, that set the stage for a new chapter in Grand Verdus’ history.

The Deschamps family’s legacy continued as Claude’s son married Clothilde Le Grix de la Salle, who eventually entrusted the estate to her brother Charles. It was in the early 19th century, around 1846, that the Grand Verdus dynasty began to flourish, and the property evolved from a mere leisure retreat to a full-fledged wine château.

.

In 1973, a pivotal moment arrived for Grand Verdus when Philippe Le Grix de la Salle departed from the Créon cooperative to pursue independent winemaking at the estate. This marked the birth of Grand Verdus as a recognized wine château, complete with its own distinct bottle and label. The castle’s magnificent structure, standing tall for over 400 years, housed the wine cellars, equipped with state-of-the-art stainless steel tanks—the pioneers of their kind in the Gironde region. This progressive approach to winemaking was guided by the expertise of Emile Peynaud, a renowned professor at the Faculty of Oenology in Bordeaux and a mentor to Philippe Le Grix de la Salle, propelling Grand Verdus towards modern oenology.

The Le Grix de la Salle family’s commitment to Grand Verdus continued with the entry of Edouard, Antoine’s second son, in 2019. Bringing his expertise in agronomy and passion for viticulture, Edouard joined the family property to support his father in vineyard management. The duo set their sights on converting the estate to organic farming, reinforcing their dedication to sustainable practices.

.

One of Grand Verdus’ greatest strengths lies in the diversity of its terroir. Spanning 120 hectares, the vineyards benefit from a unique geographical location, encompassing numerous microclimates and fertile varietals. The hilly landscape, spread across three estates, weaves a captivating tapestry of soil and subsoils, culminating in a harmonious and diverse ensemble.

The commitment to sustainability has been ingrained in Grand Verdus for years, as evidenced by their HVE3 certification in 2018. Building upon this foundation, the estate transitioned to organic certification in 2020, embracing the fundamental principles of agroecology. Emulating Mother Nature, Grand Verdus strives to mimic the natural cover found in wild grounds within their vine plots. The woods surrounding the vineyards teem with life, fostering biodiversity and maintaining a delicate ecological balance. To further optimize these benefits, Grand Verdus plans to create “ecological corridors” within their vine plots, attracting bats—the esteemed guests of honor. These winged creatures are natural predators of insect pests, playing a crucial role in protecting the grapes from harm. With the ability to consume up to 2,500 butterflies in a single night, bats offer a promising alternative to the use of harmful insecticides.

.

At the heart of Grand Verdus is an unwavering family spirit—a driving force that has propelled them throughout the ages. Drawing inspiration from the wisdom of previous generations, combining pragmatism, hard work, and a forward-thinking vision, the Le Grix de la Salle family epitomizes the essence of progress in winemaking.

As Grand Verdus continues to embrace its rich history, diverse terroir, and sustainable practices, it stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of a family united by their passion for exceptional wines and their commitment to nurturing the land they call home.
