The Torres family, Catalunya’s foremost winemaking family, has dominated wine production in Penedès since the company’s establishment in 1870. Today, the family encompasses five generations, about 2,000 hectares of vines, and nine wineries across Spain. They are pioneers of sustainable winemaking, committing to reducing carbon emissions and protecting the environment through the Torres and Earth initiative and as founding members of International Wineries for Climate Change. Visiting the Pacs del Penedès estate, inland from Barcelona, is not only an education in rich vinous heritage but also a glimpse into the future of winemaking.

The iconic Bodega Waltraud, designed by architect Javier Barba, houses the family’s most renowned wines in subterranean cellars. The Legacy Wine Experience offers guests the opportunity to taste some of these directly from the barrels while learning about the estate’s 150-year history. The Starry Night Experience takes guests from the vineyards to a presentation by astronomers, followed by dinner in the cloistered courtyard where local dishes are paired with the family’s wines, and the stars twinkle above.

The light-filled El Celleret Restaurant serves modern Mediterranean cuisine in the Montserrat mountains, surrounded by olive gardens and the prestigious Mas La Plana vineyards, known for producing the iconic Cabernet Sauvignon ‘Mas Le Plana.’ The Penedès region’s varied terrain and microclimates enable a large selection of grapes to flourish. The Torres family experiments with ancient Spanish varieties, including Garró, Querol, and Forcada, and encourages other local winemakers to do the same.
