Bodegas Borsao

Zaragoza, Spain

The region’s winemaking history can be traced back to 1203, with the Monastery of Veruela serving as its initial epicenter. The monks played a pivotal role in nurturing vineyards and developing winemaking techniques, shaping the course of viticulture in the area. As the 19th century unfolded, privately-owned wineries began to emerge in the foothills surrounding Veruela, setting the stage for a new era of winemaking.

In the 1950s, economic hardships led to the formation of six cooperatives, uniting small-scale producers and heralding a significant turning point in the region’s winemaking industry. Among these cooperatives was the Cooperative of Borja, founded in 1958, which later gave birth to the renowned Borsao brand. A few years down the line, the cooperatives of Pozuelo and Tabuenca joined forces with Borja, combining their resources and, most notably, their vineyards.

.

In 2001, the amalgamation culminated in the establishment of Bodegas Borsao S.A., a limited company. With 700 members becoming shareholders, a dedicated management team was appointed to initiate transformative changes within the winery, from sourcing grapes to revamping wine making facilities.

Today, Bodegas Borsao boasts a team of 375 passionate winegrowers. With their collective experience, abundant resources, and an array of vineyards spanning three wine cellars, a new work philosophy was born, leading to international recognition and acclaim for Borsao. Campo de Borja, established in 1980, encompasses nearly 7,500 hectares of vineyards, with an impressive production of 20-25 million kilograms of grapes annually. The region’s vine-growing assets are particularly renowned for their exceptional “garnachas,” which represent over 60% of the vineyard plantings within the D.O.

.

.

Within Campo de Borja, the oldest vineyards date back to 1145, and more than 2,000 hectares of garnacha vines are between 30 and 50 years old, adding depth and complexity to the wines produced. Alongside garnacha, other grape varieties cultivated include Tempranillo, Mazuela, Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah, Macabeo, Chardonnay, and Moscatel. Bodegas Borsao itself represents approximately 36% of the total vineyard surface within the D.O., solidifying its position as a key player in the production of premium garnacha wines worldwide.

.

.

To maintain their leadership in the garnacha wine industry, Bodegas Borsao focuses on continuous improvement. By harnessing the indigenous clon of Garnacha of Aragón, meticulously studying microclimates, and uncovering the potential of each vineyard site, they strive to deliver exceptional quality in every bottle.

Presently, exports account for 80% of their sales, with a growing presence in key markets such as the United States, Germany, Canada, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Netherlands, Sweden, Japan, and New Zealand. Bodegas Borsao’s future goal is to further solidify its position in these markets and expand its reach into emerging markets, sharing the unique story and exceptional wines of Borsao with enthusiasts worldwide.
