Château La Gorce
Aquitaine, France
The history of Château La Gorce dates back to 1821 when a beautiful charterhouse was built under the guidance of Madame Gorce. For four decades, her dedication propelled the estate to new heights, with a production of nearly 100 barrels. However, the 1930s brought challenging times, as hybrid and white wines commanded higher prices than those from the Médoc region.
In 1980, Raoul Fabre and his children embarked on a mission to revive the former Cru Bourgeois. Their unwavering determination and relentless pursuit of excellence reinvigorated the estate, focusing on producing wines of the highest quality. Their efforts set the stage for the Martins, who now carry the torch forward, continuously striving to raise the bar even higher.

.
The estate has undergone remarkable transformations under their stewardship. With a vision firmly set on the future, the Martins immediately embarked on an ambitious project: the conversion of the entire forty-eight-hectare estate to organic farming.
The year 2019 marked the beginning of a profound transformation for Château La Gorce. Beyond the wine itself, the estate’s visual and conceptual identity underwent a comprehensive makeover. Mana and Emmanuel recognized the importance of aligning the estate’s image with their forward-thinking vision. Through this reimagining, they aim to convey their personal commitment to reshaping the estate and its wines, embracing the rich heritage while embracing contemporary values.
The estate’s vineyards span forty-eight hectares, where the winery meticulously cultivates grape varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. These carefully selected grape varieties contribute to the exceptional quality and character of Château La Gorce wines. They planted white grape varieties, including a hectare of Petit Verdot, in 2022. Their first white wine is expected to debut in 2024.

The estate features three distinct sub-soils: Saint Estephe limestone, Saint Yzans limestone, and Ostrea clay. Its exceptional soil composition, coupled with the mild, cool climate influenced by its proximity to both the river and the ocean, has enabled the cultivation of a majority of Merlot (65%). Merlot thrives in cool, damp soil, making it an ideal choice for the vineyard. To further enhance their winemaking expertise, the estate has collaborated with esteemed oenologist Thomas Duclos, known for his expertise in Merlot and his work with renowned wineries such as Trolong Mondot, Château Giscours, and Château Canon.
In 2020, Château La Gorce introduced the Rouge Intense cuvée, a testament to the owners’ dedication to enhancing and expanding their wine range. They are actively involved in the development of the existing line of La Gorce wines and are constantly exploring new possibilities. Among the exciting ventures on the horizon is the creation of a rosé cuvée, promising delightful surprises for wine enthusiasts. Additionally, the estate is venturing into the production of new cuvées using amphoras, blending tradition and innovation to craft unique and captivating wines.
The year 2022 marked a significant milestone for Château La Gorce, as the estate achieved complete conversion to organic farming practices. This commitment to organic viticulture reflects the Martins’ unwavering belief in sustainable and environmentally friendly wine production. By embracing organic farming, they strive to enhance the natural expression of the terroir and produce wines that truly reflect the essence of their land.
.
.
One distinctive aspect of Château La Gorce is its collaboration with renowned artists, such as Clémentine Mélois and Pierre La Police. Through their imaginative and playful artwork, these artists bring a touch of humor and eccentricity to the labels of the Rouge Intense and Rose Dada cuvées. Rose Dada, currently in the preparation stage, is undergoing final preparations before its release. This artistic collaboration adds an extra dimension to the wines, inviting wine lovers to experience a fusion of exceptional taste and artistic expression.
Château La Gorce is a testament to the timeless allure and enduring quality of Médoc wines. With each passing vintage, the estate evolves, combining tradition and modernization to craft exceptional wines that captivate the senses. Guided by their profound respect for the land and their unwavering commitment to quality, the Martins are leading Château La Gorce into a promising future, where the past intertwines with innovation, and the wines continue to enthrall discerning palates.
