Fabrizio Battaglino

Piedmont, Italy

The history of Fabrizio Battaglino Winery stretches back to the 1960s when Fabrizio’s grandfather, Riccardo Battaglino, became one of the pioneering producers to sell bottled wine. With offerings of Barbera and Nebbiolo, Riccardo’s wines gained recognition and were even included in the esteemed “Bolaffi world wine catalogue” by Luigi Veronelli in 1973. This family tradition was carried forward by Mario Battaglino, Fabrizio’s father, and is now passionately continued by Fabrizio himself.

Located on the picturesque hills of Colla and Montebello, Fabrizio Battaglino Winery cultivates their own vineyards, boasting stunning views and delivering exceptional grapes. Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Arneis vines thrive in these vineyards, serving as the foundation for their distinguished wines, including Nebbiolo d’Alba d.o.c., Roero d.o.c., Barbera d’Alba d.o.c., and Roero Arneis d.o.c.

Despite its modest size, the winery has ambitious goals and plans for the future. With a total vineyard area of 5 hectares, the Battaglino family can personally oversee the entire farming process, ensuring meticulous care throughout the cycle. This slice of land to the left of the Tanaro River, about a quarter the size of the neighboring Langhe region, captivates with its complex terrain that can transform dramatically from one side of a hill to the other.

Fabrizio Battaglino, not only as a producer but also as a resident and admirer of the Roero, strives to convey the true essence of these hills to visitors. He believes that the word “Colla” (cliff) encapsulates the spirit of Roero, representing his vineyard’s name passed down from his grandfather and father. Colla symbolizes the limestone-sandy soil, the steep and perched rows of vines that demand manual labor, and the central position it holds in the Roero, making it an epitome of this unique terroir.

.

To understand the present, one must retrace the path that led to it. In the postwar era, the Langa and Roero territories relied on a subsistence economy, and grapes were often sold in bulk or made into wine for local consumption. However, the countryside faced hardships as industrial opportunities drew people away. Nevertheless, the connection to the land remained, and when workers returned home, they continued to support their families and tended to the vineyards.

Over time, repopulation and a growing appreciation for a life close to nature brought about a reawakening of the land’s potential. Roero wines stepped into the spotlight, and Fabrizio’s grandfather was among the early believers, proudly bottling Roero wines without riding on others’ success. Today, Roero is a young territory with many first-generation wineries, each striving to express their vineyard’s personality and the winemaker’s passion, emphasizing the uniqueness of their Nebbiolo and Arneis wines.

Roero showcases an extraordinary combination of a great red, Nebbiolo, and a great white, Arneis, in a single territory, which is quite uncommon compared to other historically renowned winemaking areas. The Roero Nebbiolo stands out with its softer tannins, aromatic complexity, and approachability, making it a fine wine that can age gracefully but doesn’t necessarily require excessive cellaring. On the other hand, Roero Arneis has garnered well-deserved fame, offering captivating floral, herbaceous, and even exotic fruit notes, thanks to the sandy soil of the region.

Fabrizio Battaglino Winery stands as a testament to the dedication and passion that drives Roero’s winemakers. With their distinctive wines, they embrace the legacy of the land while expressing their individual artistry and the true spirit of Roero.
