Zöhrer Winery

Krems, Austria

Deep within the history of Austria, the roots of the Zöhrer Winery & Family date back to the remarkable era of the Babenberger dynasty in 1270. During this time, Albrecht I, a noble ruler, granted vast farmland, orchards, and vineyards to his most loyal followers in Weinzierl, a district of Krems. The feudal lords of Krems/Weinzierl nurtured this land, passing down knowledge and tradition through generations, with Anton Zöhrer being the torchbearer of their legacy.

The Zöhrer family has consistently strived to maximize the potential of their esteemed vineyards, which are considered among the most important in the Kremstal wine region. Nestled within the terroir of the single vineyards—Kremser Sandgrube, Kremser Weinzierlberg, Kremser Gebling, Kremser Thurnerberg, and Kremser Goldberg—lies the winery’s strength and character.

.

Many of the vines in these vineyards were planted by Zöhrer’s grandfather and father, some spanning 40 to 80 years of age. The winery primarily focuses on the renowned grape varieties of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. These wines possess an unmistakable profile that reflects the unique terroir and have garnered international acclaim.

The Kremstal region has a distinct reputation for its Grüner Veltliner and Riesling wines, which account for 70% of the wines with official Austrian approval. To signify the region’s authenticity, the “Kremstal DAC” designation was established for these grape varieties. According to Austrian wine law, a “Kremstal” wine must be varietal, meaning it can only be a Riesling or a Grüner Veltliner.

.

The Kremstal DAC wines are categorized into two maturity levels: Kremstal DAC and Kremstal Reserve DAC. A classic Kremstal DAC wine has an alcohol content of 12 or 12.5% Vol. and must be dry, displaying the varietal and area-typical characteristics of freshness, fruitiness, spiciness, and a supple texture. The stylistic guidelines are established by a commission based on “reference wines.” Kremstal DAC wines are not allowed to have flavors associated with aging in small wooden casks or the presence of Botrytis. The earliest date for submission of a “Kremstal DAC” label is January 2nd of the following year after the grapes were harvested.

The Kremstal DAC Reserve wines, on the other hand, represent the pinnacle of excellence. These wines exhibit rich flavors, density on the palate, and often have a smooth finish. With a minimum alcohol content of 13% Vol. and a permissible residual sugar of up to 9 grams, Kremstal DAC Reserve wines prioritize typicity. They are allowed to undergo aging in small wooden barrels, and the resulting aromas can include subtle hints of Botrytis. The earliest date for submission of a “Kremstal DAC Reserve” label is March 15th of the following year after the grapes were harvested.

Zöhrer Winery embraces sustainable and near-natural cultivation methods, recognizing that soil fertility is the cornerstone of producing exceptional wines. They aim to minimize external influences on nature and prioritize organic cultivation practices. Toni Zöhrer, the current custodian, has plans to convert all their vineyards, including the challenging terraced plots, to organic farming, although it will undoubtedly be a long and arduous journey.

Through integrated viticulture (KIP), the Zöhrer Winery has further embraced near-natural cultivation methods in recent years. This approach harmoniously combines environmental and nature protection with economic efficiency and social responsibility. The concept of sustainability underpins their commitment to ensuring that improvements in one area never come at the expense of others. The Zöhrer Winery’s legacy is one deeply intertwined with Austria’s rich history. With each bottle, they pay homage to their ancestral lands, crafting wines that reflect the unique terroir of Kremstal while championing sustainable practices for future generations to come.
