Bodegas Alceño

Jumilla, Murcia, Spain

In the heart of Jumilla, the oldest commercial winery in the region stands proudly, holding the legacy of a family tradition that dates back to 1870. Bodegas Alceño, now managed by the Familia Bastida group, combines the richness of history with innovative winemaking techniques while staying true to its roots.

At the core of Bodegas Alceño lies their indigenous variety, Monastrell. This grape thrives in the unique combination of soil composition and climate found in the area, resulting in wines that showcase exceptional color and flavor characteristics, synonymous with quality. To ensure that the wine reaches consumers in optimal condition, Bodegas Alceño employs stringent quality systems to control all production, aging, and bottling processes. The winery boasts a highly qualified team and utilizes computer programs to guarantee and monitor all quality-related aspects of their operations.

The philosophy and identity of Bodegas Alceño revolve around maintaining tradition, from the meticulous care and control of the vineyards in a sustainable manner to the natural processes employed in the winery until the wines are finally bottled. Despite being established in 1870, the winery has continuously adapted to the times, constantly striving to achieve the highest standards of quality and individuality in their wines.

With a capacity of 3,500,000 liters, Bodegas Alceño employs a combination of concrete, oak, and stainless-steel containers for their winemaking. Remarkably, the original barrels and cones from the winery’s founding year are still present, adding a touch of history to the production process.

The elaboration tanks, constructed from concrete, incorporate the “submerged hat” method and temperature controls to handle the grapes with utmost care. This approach ensures that the grapes preserve their unique characteristics and the resulting wines are crafted in the most respectful manner possible. Additionally, the winery is equipped with state-of-the-art machinery to manage the musts and wines, prioritizing the care and quality of the wines throughout all processes.

In the aging process, Bodegas Alceño embraces continuous research and development. Temperature and humidity are meticulously controlled to achieve the best possible results from the wines. Oak barrels of varying sizes, ranging from 225lt to 500lt, are utilized, with 70% of the oak sourced from France and 30% from the United States.

As a proud member of the D.O.P. Jumilla, Bodegas Alceño benefits from the region’s unique conditions for producing high-quality wines. Located in the southeast of Spain, the area acts as a transition from the coast to the La Mancha plateau. The region boasts a considerable difference in altitude, ranging from 400 to 950 meters, with valleys ascending gradually from south to north. These diverse altitudes, combined with excellent conditions for organic farming, allow Bodegas Alceño to control numerous vineyards owned by various farmers. This enables them to work with grapes of different varieties, altitudes, ages, and soils.

The red varieties include Monastrell, Syrah, Garnacha Tintorera, Garnacha, Tempranillo, and Cabernet Sauvignon, while the white varieties encompass Sauvignon Blanc, Verdejo, Macabeo, and Airén. The soils in the region predominantly consist of stones, limestone, sandy loam, and clay. Rainfed cultivation accounts for 80% of the vineyards, and most are grown in the bush style. Due to low rainfall, the yields are intentionally kept low. The region experiences cold winters and hot summers, resulting in a harvest season that commences in September and concludes in late October.
