Puente Alto, Chile

The story of Almaviva Winery began in 1997 when Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and Eduardo Guilisasti Tagle formed a visionary partnership, aiming to create a wine that transcends borders. Their collaboration marked a historic moment, blending the esteemed traditions of Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA and Viña Concha y Toro S.A. The debut of Almaviva in 1998 swiftly garnered international acclaim, showcasing the potential of a Franco-Chilean wine alliance.

The name Almaviva pays homage to classical French literature, drawing inspiration from Count Almaviva, a character immortalized in Beaumarchais’ iconic play “The Marriage of Figaro.” This fusion of Hispanic and French cultural elements extends to the wine’s label, where Beaumarchais’ handwritten name intertwines with Chile’s ancestral motifs, symbolizing a harmonious blend of heritage and innovation.

Almaviva embraces the esteemed Château concept, a hallmark of Bordeaux winemaking, which emphasizes meticulous attention to terroir, vineyard, and winemaking techniques dedicated to crafting exceptional wines. Nestled in Puente Alto, Maipo Valley’s highest reaches, Almaviva’s vineyards sprawl across 60 hectares, meticulously nurtured to bring forth the essence of their unique terroir.

The terroir of Puente Alto is characterized by rocky, loamy clay soils and a semi-arid Mediterranean climate, offering optimal conditions for grape cultivation. The influence of the Andes cordillera brings cool breezes and significant day-night temperature variations, contributing to the development of grapes with vibrant freshness, balanced acidity, and expressive aromas—essential elements that define the distinctive character and quality of Almaviva wines.
