Bodegas LAN

Fuenmayor, Spain

Once upon a time, there was a bend in the River Ebro. Once there was a land loaded with legend and history. Once there was Viña Lanciano. Viña Lanciano, an expansive and awe-inspiring setting spanning 72 hectares, is embraced by the graceful curve of the River Ebro. Situated on the natural border between the Rioja Alta and the Rioja Alavesa, this privileged location benefits from the shelter provided by the majestic Cantabria Mountains, resulting in the creation of a distinct microclimate within its 22 parcels. Here, the utmost dedication to maintaining the natural balance of the environment is observed through sustainable vine growing practices.

The terroir of Viña Lanciano possesses a character of its own. The passage of time, the legacy of nature, and the fluctuations in the river’s level over the years have granted Viña Lanciano unique conditions. The Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Graciano, and Garnacha vines, some as old as sixty years, must delve deep into the soil to extract the necessary nutrients to survive on this former pebble-strewn riverbed. This almost legendary effort by nature is transmitted to the grapes, ultimately reflected in the wines’ mineral profile.

The climate also plays a significant role in shaping Viña Lanciano. Sheltered by the Cantabria Mountains and surrounded completely by a meander of the River Ebro, this terroir remains naturally safeguarded from frost and extreme summer heat.

Sustainable viticulture is a core practice at Viña Lanciano. By actively implementing sustainable viticulture techniques, the vineyards strive for a balanced approach, fostering the plants’ natural immunity and creating a microclimate that promotes free airflow and sunlight circulation around the grape bunches.

The Viña Lanciano estate comprises 22 parcels, each with its own distinct qualities. From the outset, Viña Lanciano established pioneering standards, recognizing that winemaking starts with viticulture, placing the vineyard in the leading role. Men and women with an understanding of the land’s intricacies meticulously tend to each parcel, respecting its unique timings and requirements. Daily tasks such as pruning, fertilizing, and thinning the vines preserve the terroir sustainably until the day arrives for the much-anticipated hand harvesting of the fruit.

At Viña Lanciano, hand selection and harvest form the core of their winemaking philosophy. Grapes are meticulously picked by hand, ensuring the highest quality. After harvesting, the grapes undergo a thorough double sorting process at the winery. This meticulous approach allows the resulting wines to truly reflect the vineyard, its parcels, and the grape varieties they come from. During barrel aging, the winemakers prioritize preserving the unique characteristics of the grape variety and terroir, enabling them to reach their full potential. Viña Lanciano’s commitment to caring for the raw material is evident in every meticulous detail.

Visitors are warmly welcomed to the winery, located in Fuenmayor, the heart of the Rioja Alta. Here, they can partake in an immersive experience that unveils the story behind Viña Lanciano.
