VIK Winery
Millahue, Chile
In the world of winemaking, where history runs deep and tradition often dictates the rules, the story of VIK winery sparkles with audacity and innovation. The tale began in 2004 when founders Alex and Carrie Vik embarked on an adventurous challenge: to discover the perfect spot on earth, a hidden gem that offered the flawless conditions for crafting the world’s premier wines. Their quest led them across the vast, fertile expanses of South America, launching an extraordinary journey that, through unwavering dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence, gave birth to the reality that is the majestic VIK winery.
Their quest ended in the Cachapoal Valley in Chile’s Region VI, specifically in Millahue, a name which means “place of gold” in the Mapuche language. This historical area, home to gold panning sites during the Spanish conquest, enchanted the team with its breathtaking beauty and perfect winegrowing conditions. In 2006, the couple purchased 4,500 hectares of this golden paradise, marking the beginning of the VIK winery.
.
.
Envisioned as a harmonious blend of innovative technology and natural beauty, the VIK winery is designed to leave a minimal footprint on the landscape. The 4,500-hectare estate is divided into twelve distinctive zones, each with unique characteristics perfect for vine cultivation. Currently, 327 hectares are planted with a variety of grapevines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Syrah. These vines, bathed in sea breezes and nurtured in the fertile Millahue soil, yield the exquisite grapes that make VIK’s wines stand out in the industry.
Central to the winery’s design is the iconic reflecting pool, a masterpiece designed by Chilean architect Smiljan Radic and his sculptor wife, Marcela Correa. The pool, an aesthetic marvel with its geometric layout and estate-sourced sculpted rocks, provides a welcoming atmosphere for visitors. It also serves a functional role, cooling the underground cellars where the majority of the winery is housed to maintain an ideal temperature for the vinification process.
.
.
The subterranean design, complemented by a unique transparent roof, helps to maintain energy efficiency. This design allows natural sunlight to illuminate the winery while preserving a cool environment for wine production and storage. In 2007, the construction of the winery commenced, adhering to the Viks’ vision of a cutting-edge, technologically innovative, and visually stunning experience. Seven years later, in 2014, a luxury designer hotel and a tasting room were added, creating an immersive, luxurious, and educational experience for guests.
Innovation at VIK is not limited to architectural design; it extends to the production of the wine itself. The winery’s holistic approach to viticulture focuses on the integration of humans and nature, combining the best winegrowing and winemaking techniques with a commitment to environmental conservation and social development. This principle extends to their wines, which have earned the winery numerous accolades and high ratings, including a 99-point score from James Suckling for the 2016 VIK blend.
.
.
The wines produced by VIK winery embody the rich terroir of Millahue and are a testament to their unique winemaking approach. Each blend is an elegant, balanced, and complex symphony of flavors, showcasing the freshness, fruit, color, balance, and structure that the Millahue terroir offers.
The VIK winery experience doesn’t end with wine tasting. The Pavilion restaurant, situated at the other end of the reflecting pool, serves dishes that celebrate Chilean cuisine. Under the leadership of Executive Chef Pablo Cáceres, the menu is crafted based on the seasonal produce from the estate’s organic garden.
.

Completing the experience, the Retreat offers guests luxury accommodations nestled in the heart of the Andes Mountains. Here, under a floating roof inspired by Frank Gehry’s designs, guests can unwind in a light-filled living room, flanked by a Zen garden featuring two giant bonsai trees.
In conclusion, the VIK winery, under the guidance of Alex and Carrie Vik, has emerged as a premier destination for wine lovers. It’s not just a place where world-class wines are made; it’s a testament to a vision brought to life—a vision of top-tier winemaking, sustainable practices, and a deep respect for nature and heritage. Truly, VIK Winery is a “place of gold” in the world of wine.
