Fournier Père & Fils

Sancerre, France

Since 1926, Fournier Père et Fils has been continuing its captivating story in the village of Chaudoux, situated in the heart of the Sancerre appellation. Through unwavering perseverance, occasional bravery, and an indomitable entrepreneurial spirit, the family estate has evolved into a revered reference in Sancerre, producing sought-after cuvées cherished by wine enthusiasts worldwide.

The establishment of the Sancerre appellation in 1936 marked a pivotal moment in the journey of Fournier Père et Fils. Léon, a visionary member of the founding committee of the Verdigny syndicate, played a crucial role in this historic milestone. In 1946, the operation was handed over to Paul, Léon’s son-in-law. At that time, the estate spanned 1.5 hectares of vineyards and boasted a delightful herd of goats, contributing to the production of the renowned Crottin de Chavignol cheese.

The arrival of Claude, Paul’s son, in 1968 signaled the next chapter in the family’s legacy. Although the estate’s growth had been modest, with 5 cows, 30 goats, and 3 hectares of vineyards, Claude’s determination would prove transformative. By 1972, the transition to specialized vine cultivation was complete, leading to the expansion of the estate to an impressive 15 hectares.

In 2015, the de Villebois family acquired Domaine Fournier Père et Fils, uniting two icons of Sancerre and solidifying the estate’s place in the annals of the region’s history. As passionate custodians of the Sancerre appellation, Fournier Père et Fils has witnessed its growth and proudly contributed to its ongoing excellence.

The wines produced by Fournier Père et Fils have become loyal companions to discerning palates, embodying the essence of French gastronomy. Rooted in pleasure, traditions, good taste, and craftsmanship, these wines are a true testament to the cultural heritage of the region.

One of the estate’s invaluable assets is its vineyards, evenly distributed across the three terroirs of the Sancerre appellation. Comprising a myriad of small plots, Fournier Père et Fils enjoys access to a diverse range of soils, slopes, and exposures. This rich tapestry of terroirs contributes to the consistency and complexity that define the estate’s wines year after year.

Vines, remarkable beings in their own right, eloquently express the subtleties of the soil through their bountiful fruits. The estate’s unwavering commitment to nurturing “vegetal diversity” ensures that each vine in a given plot thrives harmoniously, optimizing the aromatic nuances within.

Sancerre’s ideal terroir has bestowed upon Sauvignon Blanc an unparalleled aromatic richness. Fournier Père et Fils’s vineyards, with their symbiotic relationship with the region’s soils and climate, manifest a truly unique combination. It is within this framework that the multifaceted complexity and distinct subtleties of the terroirs are masterfully revealed.

Within the neighboring vineyards of Sancerre, the exceptional Pinot Noir grape finds its sublime expression. Esteemed worldwide for its ability to produce wines of the utmost caliber, this grape variety imparts a captivating freshness and finesse that continuously surprises and delights.

As dedicated witnesses to the ongoing climate change, Fournier Père et Fils has embraced the responsibility to observe and adapt its farming practices to the evolving needs of nature. The estate’s commitment to a quasi-organic viticulture, refraining from the use of synthetic chemicals, stands as a testament to its devotion to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.

Fournier Père et Fils invites you to embark on a remarkable journey through the vineyards of Sancerre, where tradition, quality, and the unmistakable allure of Blanc de Blancs converge. Discover the profound beauty and extraordinary craftsmanship that define our wines, as we continue to nurture the legacy handed down through generations.
