Bernard Magrez

Pessac-Léognan, France

Bernard Magrez’s life-story is one that embodies passion, a constant pursuit of perfection, savoir-faire, and remarkable success. Born in Bordeaux in 1936, amidst the looming shadow of war, Magrez’s journey began in challenging times. However, it was precisely during these turbulent moments that his extraordinary inner strength and clear vision took root.

At the age of 16, Magrez left school and ventured into the world of wine trade. As a self-taught young man, he relied on self-discipline, rigor, and the knowledge he gleaned from books. Even at this early stage, Magrez displayed the qualities that would define him in the future.

In 1961, at the age of 25, Magrez’s ambition led him to the United States, where he encountered a revolutionary concept in retailing—the hypermarket store. Inspired by this innovation, he returned to France and established his own company, specializing in whisky and port. His port brand became immensely popular, quickly ascending to the position of the second most favored port brand in the country, and setting the stage for his further endeavors.

In the 1980s, Magrez made a pivotal decision that would shape his career. He chose to focus on acquiring top-end wine estates, marking a turning point in his journey. His first acquisition was the renowned Graves Grand Cru Classé, Château Pape Clément, followed by Château Fombrauge, a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé, and Château La Tour Carnet, a Médoc Grand Cru Classé. These acquisitions, along with eighteen other renowned wine estates in France, including Clos Haut Peyraguey, a Sauternes Premier Grand Cru Classé, established Magrez as the sole owner of four prestigious wine estates simultaneously.

Unsatisfied with staying within familiar boundaries, Magrez’s thirst for discovery propelled him to venture beyond France. He acquired vineyards in eight different countries, including Morocco, Spain, Portugal, Japan, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and the USA, amassing a total of 42 wine estates spanning over 1,000 hectares (2,470 acres) of vines. This impressive feat serves as a testament to Magrez’s relentless pursuit of challenges and new horizons.

To ensure meticulous care for his wine estates, Magrez remains committed to perfection. Technological innovation lies at the core of his vine-growing strategy. Sensor-equipped drones surveil the vines, the estates’ Scientific Centre tirelessly detects outbreaks of various diseases, and weather stations monitor hazards on a daily basis, plot by plot.

Monsieur Magrez has established a cutting-edge startup incubator with a sole focus on the wine industry, providing unwavering support to these innovative ventures in their entrepreneurial journey in Léognan. Expanding the horizons further, a new incubator has recently emerged in Strasbourg, offering an additional platform for budding wine startups to thrive.

Bernard Magrez took the pioneering step of welcoming wine enthusiasts to his estates, offering them an exclusive glimpse into the world of his exceptional Grands Vins. Through extraordinary accommodations, immersive wine experiences, and educational workshops, he unfolded the secrets behind his wines. Among the remarkable offerings of the renowned wine tourism agency “Bernard Magrez Luxury Wine Experience,” Château Pape Clément stands tall as the crown jewel, providing an array of prestigious experiences that span across the globe.

.In a recent collaboration, Château Pape Clément has forged a powerful alliance with Deep Planet, leveraging the capabilities of satellite technology to proactively anticipate the impact of climate change on vineyards. By harnessing the data gathered from space, this innovative partnership allows for comprehensive monitoring and analysis, enabling Château Pape Clément to stay one step ahead in mitigating the effects of climate change on their vineyards.

At Château Fombrauge, the latest generation electric robot has replaced herbicides, while Château Pape Clément boasts digitally-connected barrels. In addition, since 2016, each bottle from a Bernard Magrez Grand Cru estate carries an authentication seal, ensuring transparency and traceability for consumers. These examples highlight how innovation serves as the foundation for excellence in Magrez’s pursuits.

Bernard Magrez’s life-story is a testament to the power of passion, unwavering commitment, and an unyielding pursuit of perfection. From humble beginnings, he carved his path through the wine industry, acquiring prestigious estates, exploring new territories, and embracing technological advancements. As a visionary, he continues to leave an indelible mark on the world of wine, inspiring others to push boundaries, innovate, and strive for greatness.
