Mosel is one of the most famous 13 German wine regions for quality wines (Qualitätswein), and takes its name from the Mosel River. The Mosel River begins in France and flows into Germany where it twists sharply for 150 miles (250 km) and deposits into the Rhine on its way to the North Sea.

While wine production has existed here for many centuries, the cultivation and harvest has always remained problematic. With its northernly continental climate that is marked by cool temperatures, the best producing vineyard sites are located along the Mosel river and its tributary where the heat from the sun can be maximized by reflection up from the water.

The Mosel Valley is home to more grapes than just Riesling. That said, Riesling does account for over 60% of the vineyard land. Other grapes worth investigating further include Elbling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Kerner and Auxerrois. The wines of the Middle Mosel are considered the most balanced wines of German, some of the countries finest wines – and able to age gracefully for 50-100 years. Mosel Riesling ranges from bone-dry to sweet but the primary aromas and taste profile are distinct and easy to identify.
The wines of the German Mosel region are traditionally presented in tall green coloured ‘hock style’wine bottles, this is to distinguish Mosel wines from the ‘brown’ bottle wines of the Rheinhessen, Germany. The Mosel is also well known for its ‘Eiswein’ production with the area’s characteristic high acidity combined with the sweetness produced by the concentration of the sugars in the frozen grapes.
Steep Hillsides and Fine Wines
Connoisseurs can choose from literally thousands of different wines along the Moselle. Some 3,600 growers cultivate grapes in 524 vineyard sites. Nowhere else can you enjoy so many steep-hillside wines made by so many different producers. Any German village that is close to a vineyard will have wineries where you can sample the wines and buy some for back home. Other growers deliver their grapes to the Moselle wine cooperative or to companies that produce and bottle the wines, then export them around the world.
