The journey of “At the Gate” Vineyard commenced in 1994 when Claire, having already spent a decade in viticulture, identified an exceptional site for a vineyard in Wrattonbully. The name of the wine label, “At the Gate,” is a heartfelt reflection of their daily morning ritual of gathering their eight children at the gate as they prepared to board the school bus. Their philosophy, both in raising their children and nurturing their vineyard, centers around creating a sustainable, healthy, and nurturing environment while minimizing interference.

Simon and Maaike Berns were profoundly influenced by their travels through the rolling hills and picturesque vineyards of France in the 1980s. Immersed in the rich culture of wine, gastronomy, and the French passion for grape cultivation and winemaking, they returned to Perth with a newfound inspiration for the art of living, or “savoir vivre.” In 1993, the couple acquired a piece of land in the Swan Valley, where they initiated their winemaking journey by planting a vineyard on weekends.
