1. Kloster Eberbach

.

The history of the Kloster Eberbach winery goes back as far as the history of the cultural monument itself: viticulture was one of the main occupations of the French monks from Burgundy who settled in the Rheingau at the beginning of the 12th century. What was initially intended for personal use soon developed into a coveted commodity that secured the future and prosperity of the monastery.

Since 1998, Eberbach Abbey has been owned by a non-profit foundation under public law, the “Eberbach Monastery Foundation”. The tasks of the foundation are based on the overall goal of the sustainable protection and use of the monastery. The main goals of the foundation’s work include the preservation and development of the historic building structure, cultural preservation and the opening of the facility to the general public and its use by third parties.

2. Schloss Johannisberg

.

Wine has been cultivated at Schloss Johannisberg for 1200 years, and since 1720 exclusively Riesling. Here is the cradle of one of the oldest and noblest grape varieties in the world. From the long history of Schloss Johannisberg springs passion, responsibility, and pride to produce an outstanding Riesling and to inspire people for it.

50 hectares in size, facing exactly south. A quartzite hill in front of the Taunus massif. With an inclination of 45 degrees, the mountain extends up to 182 meters above sea level and offers the grapes perfect sunlight. Schloss Johannisberger Terroir in combination with their passion for top quality is the basis of exceptional wines.

3. Weingut A. Christmann

.

Their family has been working in the vineyards around Gimmeldingen since the 16th century. 1798, the French Revolution changes the Palatinate, one of their ancestors takes the chance and founded the winery. The experience of more than 220 vintages is passed on from generation to generation and is the basis of their work. Today they are still a family winery, but their work would not be possible without their committed employees. They are their right and left hand in the cellar, in the vineyard and in contact with the customers. Their work is based on the common belief that they can only be satisfied with the best.

They are not only the soil for their vines to grow on but also tell the story of many generations before them, who have made them part of the great cultural landscape of the Mittelhaardt with their work. The famous traditional sites of Pfalz lie between Neustadt and Kallstadt. The hills of the Haardtrand have brought forth wines of the highest quality for centuries. Their winery is located in the south of the region. Each of their vineyards is a very special place for them, why we cherish their indivduality.

4. Dr. Bürklin Wolf

.

Bettina Bürklin-von Guradze, the eldest daughter of Dr. Albert Bürklin, inherited the Estate from her parents in 1990, and since then has taken the lead with her own vision. Carrying on where her ancestors left off, the key objective is to produce top-quality Riesling in harmony with nature. To achieve this, the entire vineyard area was converted to biodynamics, starting in 2001, and is certified since 2008. This ensures that the diversity and depth of the terroir can be mirrored and presented perfectly. The passion to respect the inherited resources, and to maintain them for her children and further generations to come is the focal point. They appreciate their older vines as they believe that they have a deep connection with their land. They know that while these plants generate less fruit, the fruit they do produce offers more complexity and concentrated flavors to wines.

Furnished with antique furniture, their vinothek is just the right place to find the peace to taste the top-quality Riesling wines of their Estate. Regina Görg and Riccardo Korner are experienced advisers who are happy to present the philosophy of wine production at the Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Estate.

5. Georg Breuer

.

The estate, founded in 1880 as part of a wine merchant company, has been owned by the Breuer family since the beginning of the 20th century. Georg Breuer enlarged the estate and increased the export of wines. His sons Bernhard and Heinrich and later Bernhard’s daughter Theresa expanded the vineyard size to 40 hectares in the best Rüdesheim, Rauenthal and Lorch sites. From the early 80’s Bernhard Breuer’s efforts gained an international reputation for the estate. Today it is managed by his daughter Theresa Breuer and production manager of many years, Hermann Schmoranz, with the assistance of cellar master Markus Lundén.

They cultivate 40 hectares of vineyards in Rheingau, in Rüdesheim (25,5 ha), Rauenthal (6,5 ha) and Lorch (8 ha), 65% of which is on steep slopes.
Their best vineyard sites in Rüdesheim: Berg Schlossberg (Artist label since 1980), Berg Rottland and Berg Roseneck, in Rauenthal: Nonnenberg (monopole) aswell as in Lorch: Pfaffenwies.

6. Weingut In den Zehn Morgen

.

A large number of vineyards from the Bad Kreuznach region already obtained top ratings in the Prussian classification of vineyards dating back from 1901. In den Zehn Morgen objective is to restore the age of outstanding wines from Bad Kreuznach and to enliven the potential of their vineyards. In 2013, the vineyards of the great Ökonomierat August E. Anheuser wine estate was bought by Steffen Montigny, an estate which had already been renowned for over 100 years for their prestigious terroir.

They have been cultivating their vineyards in harmony with nature since 2016, using traditional sowing methods and good compost to improve the soil. They like to give their wines plenty of time to mature, which provides them with natural stability and particular complexity. For them, the vision of In den Zehn Morgen is only imaginable with responsible cultivation.

7. Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm

.

The Prüm family’s enduring presence in Wehlen extends over four centuries, anchoring them firmly in the region’s winemaking heritage. The estate’s origins trace back to 1911 when Johann Josef Prüm founded it, following the dissolution of the S.A Prum winery. The Prüm estate boasts 14 hectares (35 acres) of meticulously curated vineyard holdings spread across the prestigious landscapes of Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Bernkasteler Lay, Bernkasteler Badstube, and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, the Prüm family focuses exclusively on the cultivation and harvesting of the esteemed Riesling grape variety. Annually, the vineyard produces an average of 10,000 to 13,000 cases of exceptional wine, with the Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Himmelreich vineyards standing as the foremost sources of both quantity and quality for this venerable winery.

The cornerstone of the Prüm estate lies in its dedication to preserving the tradition of winemaking in Wehlen, a tradition that has thrived for centuries. By concentrating their efforts on the Riesling grape and nurturing their prized vineyards, the Prüm family continues to craft outstanding wines that reflect both the rich history of the region and their unwavering commitment to quality, making them a true cornerstone of the local winemaking heritage.

8. Peter Lauer

.

It was over 100 years ago that Saar wine had a mythical reputation. The oldest vineyard classification in the world from 1832 testifies to the importance of viticulture on the Saar at that time. This historical viticultural cadastre describes the world’s most exclusive and valuable vineyards of the 19th century. At this time, great-great-grandfather Matthias laid the foundation for a 180-year-old tradition.

Riesling is their passion at Weingut Peter Lauer. Their wine estate in Ayl has among the best steep slopes on the Saar. In addition to the famous Ayler Kupp, they cultivate two other important vineyards in the Mosel region: the Saar Feilser directly above the river and the steeply sloping vineyard Schonfels, a little farther upstream. They also replanted and recultivated the now forgotten Lambertskirch, just a stone’s throw from Schonfels. Their white wines have been among the best in the Saar for many years. Since 2013, they have been a member of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates).

9. Sekthaus Raumland

.

In 1984, a bold vision took shape, driven by an unyielding desire to make a significant mark in the world of winemaking. Since that pivotal year, this passionate family has consistently pushed boundaries, pioneering the production of high-quality sparkling wines using the traditional bottle fermentation method in Germany. At the time, such an endeavor seemed unimaginable to many, but they embraced the challenge with unwavering determination.

Today, this dedicated family meticulously tends to 10 hectares of vineyards, all cultivated with a steadfast commitment to ecological practices. Their deep-seated love for classic Burgundy grape varieties, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Meunier, is evident in every bottle they produce. Situated in the picturesque regions of Rheinhessen and the Palatinate, their vineyards benefit from unique terroirs that infuse their sparkling wines with minerality, depth, and complexity. The grapes, lovingly handpicked, undergo gentle processing, ensuring that only the heart of the grape, the Cuvée Pressing, is utilized in crafting their exceptional sparkling wines.

10. Weingut Aldinger

.

In 1992, building on 500 years of wine growing tradition, Gert Joachim Aldinger takes the helm. Dubbed the ‘King of the Kappelberg,’ Gert Joachim Aldinger’s decision to plant international grape varieties and radically reduce yield broke new ground in the region. 15 years later, the estate is among Württemberg’s finest. And like the prized vines on the Fellbach slopes, Gert Aldinger’s sons Hansjörg and Matthias are aging nicely into the second generation. This seamless transition is a tremendous point of pride for both the family and the estate

Working together with nature is the only way to achieve world-class quality. They listen carefully to the needs of their soil, vines and skies. Each vineyard and each vintage must be accepted on its own unique merits. Each variety contains a unique set of characteristics and conditions. From terroir to table, their focus is always on finding the optimal, individual setting to let each and every one of their grapes shine.

11. Schloss Wackerbarth

.

Schloss Wackerbarth, nestled in the town of Radebeul between Dresden and Meissen, is one of Europe’s oldest sparkling wine producers. It is also Europe’s first vineyard to allow its guests to discover and experience the world of wine firsthand. Romantically located amid the vineyards outside the charming town of Radebeul, Schloss Wackerbarth handcrafts its award-winning wines and sparkling wine to perfection.

Tours through the winery are conducted daily, bringing the guests closer to Saxony wine and sparkling wine. A gourmet meal in their exquisite restaurant, prepared by the head cook, provides the perfect culmination to your visit to Schloss Wackerbarth. Experience the estate’s unique atmosphere and discover firsthand, why Schloss Wackerbarth was named “Germany’s best sparkling wine producer” (German sparkling wine award 2018).

12. Van Volxem

.

At Van Volxem, the spirit of timelessness prevails, guiding every endeavor. They firmly believe that while there are many things that can be done differently, there are also many practices that cannot be improved upon, as they have been perfected on steep slopes over thousands of years. Unwavering commitment lies in crafting authentic, handcrafted wines that are fermented by wild yeasts and made without the use of fining agents.

The vision is to revive and recreate the exceptional worldwide reputation that Saar wines enjoyed around 1900. They aim to achieve this by returning to the traditional artisanal crafts that once defined their wines. They invite you to share their passion for wine by experiencing the captivating essence of Saar wines from exceptional vineyard sites.

13. Weingut Dr. Loosen

.

Ernie Loosen is a highly respected figure in the world of wine, known as Riesling royalty for his passion and innovative ideas. He took over his family’s estate in 1988, which has been producing exceptional wines for over 200 years. Under his leadership, the estate’s reputation has soared to new heights, rivaling the steep slopes on which its grapes grow.

The estate produces a range of white wines from Riesling, including dry and lusciously sweet varieties, as well as a sparkling rosé made from Pinot Noir. With countless awards to its name, the estate is a member of the exclusive VdP, Germany’s quality-driven growers’ association, and holds several vineyards of GG status, Germany’s unofficial equivalent of Grand Cru.

14. Schloss Vollrads

.

Located in the picturesque region of Oestrich-Winkel, on the verdant banks of the Rhine River, Schloss Vollrads is an estate that holds an illustrious 800-year history, deeply intertwined with the cultivation and perfection of one particular grape – Riesling. Despite their extensive history, this revered wine estate refrains from dwelling in the past, opting instead to concentrate on the creation of delightful wines and engaging experiences that elicit happiness in every visitor.

Schloss Vollrads, distinguished by its iconic fourteenth-century moated tower, is a beacon in the Rheingau landscape. Visitors are encouraged to embark on ‘Relaxing Wine Rambles’ to explore the expansive estate. These outings incorporate woodland walks, nature trails, and crucially, tours of the vineyards – the heart of this Riesling empire.

15. Dönnhoff

.

The Dönnhoff Family proudly calls Oberhausen an der Nahe home, as they have been deeply captivated by the majestic landscapes of the Nahe Valley for over 250 years. The first official mention of the Dönnhoff name dates back to 1761, and their family history book recounts remarkable moments like the flourishing of 1781 and a bountiful grape harvest in 1784.

The cornerstone for the estate’s success was laid by Helmut Dönnhoff’s grandfather, who initiated a legacy that would thrive for generations. Hermann Dönnhoff (1880-1953) focused on planting Riesling vines in prestigious vineyards and, by the 1920s, began bottling and selling these exceptional wines under individual vineyard names.

The Best Vineyards in Germany encapsulates the beauty and brilliance of a country deeply connected to its winemaking heritage. Through this exploration, we’ve delved into the scenic landscapes, tasted the distinctive terroirs, and admired the dedication of the vintners who have elevated German wines to world-class status. As we raise a glass to the harmonious blend of tradition and innovation in these vineyards, it becomes evident that Germany’s vinicultural excellence is a testament to the country’s enduring love affair with the vine and its enduring legacy on the world stage.
