The seven-floor gravity-fed winery, carved 35 meters down into the rock below, is a remarkable piece of architecture that reflects the ambition of its founders. The winery produces Old World Bordeaux blends dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère.
Clos Apalta’s mission to put Chilean wine on the map began in 1994 and was accomplished in 2018 when Apalta was awarded its own Denomination of Origin. The Clos Apalta wines have won numerous accolades, combining French finesse with the exceptional terroir of the region. The vineyard, situated in a natural amphitheater of native forest, boasts some of the oldest vines in the area, planted as far back as 1915.
3. Viña Cousino Macul
.
Founded in 1856, Cousino Macul is the only winery in Chile amongst those established in the 19th century that continues in the hands of the original founding family. The company remains 100% under family control, producing limited quantities of fine wines. The mission of Cousino Macul is to produce world-class wines that are unmistakably Chilean, carrying the distinctive character of the Maipo Valley.

4. Viu Manent
.
Viu Manent, a family-run winery in the rustic countryside estate of Colchagua Valley, Chile, has been at the forefront of the country’s wine tourism industry since 1995. Founded in 1935, the winery offers a flagship tour through the Variety Garden, vineyards, and tasting session, concluding with a chance to ride in antique horse-drawn carriages. The estate offers high-quality wines in white, red, and rosé styles that champion Chilean Malbec and Carménère grapes.
Viu Manent’s Food and Wine Studio, managed by celebrity chef Pilar Rodríguez, serves meat and fish cooked in a mud oven, paired with salads and other refreshing options. The winery supports sustainable practices, such as using solar panels for tourist operations, preserving native flora and fauna alongside the vineyards, and reducing the carbon footprint. Recently, the winery earned ‘purple’ certification, recognising its tourism practices, environmental, social, and winemaking procedures.
5. Viña Casas del Bosque
.
Casas del Bosque is a boutique estate located in Chile’s Casablanca Valley, established in 1993 by Juan Cuneo Solari. The family’s primary focus is on quality over quantity, offering guests a chance to enjoy their cool-climate wines alongside good food and company.
Casas del Bosque produces quality-focused white, rosé, red, sparkling, and sweet (late harvest) wines from cool climate sites. The estate’s 189 hectares produce Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Riesling, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc. Vinification is restrained to preserve the natural characteristics of the wines.
6. Viña Montes
.
Four friends shared a vision to make Chilean wines of a higher level than the world had ever seen. In the late 1980s, their dream became a reality with Viña Montes, which is now sold in more than 100 countries and is noted as a pioneer of high-end Chilean wine, especially Syrah. The winery features gravitational technology, sustainable ethos and feng shui design by expert Sylvia Galleguillos. Its entrance is accessed via a wooden path over a small lagoon of water flowing towards the building, with a fountain resembling a lily at its core that connects the building with the outer world. Metal, wood, earth, fire and water elements are highlighted in the winery’s design philosophy, which aims to achieve a deeper union with its surroundings and, ultimately, wines.
Fuegos de Apalta is nestled in the vineyards and offers a gastronomic experience blending theatre and nature’s fiercest weapon – fire. Guests can hike or cycle through the vineyards before enjoying food smoked, roasted, and grilled around the central fire pit. Montes has vineyards in the Colchagua, Aconcagua, Curicó, Itata and Maule Valleys, producing wines of varying styles and price points. Its flagship cuvées include the intense red blend ‘Alpha M’ and the Montes ‘Folly,’ one of Chile’s first ultra-premium Syrahs made from the Apalta vineyards’ steepest and highest slopes.
7. Bodegas RE
.
Bodegas RE is a small family vineyard established in 2008 by Pablo Morandé Lavín and his children: Pablo, Piedad, and Macarena. The family consists of professionals in the field of oenology and holds a strong connection to human history, customs, traditions, and gastronomy. Their unique wine concept revolves around recreating, reinventing, and revealing ancestral wines, ranging from those mentioned in biblical accounts to wines crafted by their family in clay jars in past centuries. Bodegas RE strives to bring back the beauty of these wines, breathing new life into them. By combining the historical foundation with modernity, the family has found inspiration in the discovery of Casablanca and the pioneering of modern and elegant wines, allowing them to create the distinctive RE wines.
The history of Bodegas RE is both long and recent. Pablo Morandé Lavín represents the ninth generation of the Morandé family, who first planted vineyards in Peñaflor and produced wines and liquors in clay jars. He also represents the fifth generation of the Lavín and Urrutia families, who owned extensive vineyards in the Cauquenes area of the Maule region. These viticultural roots deeply influenced their winemaking philosophy and aspirations. The decision to create wines as a family and revolutionize the wine industry was made in 2008. The family has preserved the ancestral clay jars from Maule and uses them partially in the winemaking process to demonstrate that excellence can be achieved through a combination of ancient techniques and contemporary knowledge. By redesigning and recreating the old clay jars into giant concrete amphorae, Bodegas RE has created vessels with unique character, quality, and beauty in the world of wine.
8. VIK Winery
.
In their quest for winemaking excellence, Alex and Carrie VIK embarked on a remarkable journey that would ultimately lead them to the picturesque landscapes of Millahue, nestled in the Cachapoal Valley of Chile. It was here, in this enchanting corner of the world, that their dream of crafting some of the finest wines took root. Their dedication to the art and science of winemaking was unwavering, and after an exhaustive two-year search for the perfect terroir, they discovered what they had been seeking in the heart of South America.
The VIK vineyard, a testament to their passion and vision, emerged amidst the majestic Andes mountains, within the Millahue Valley, a name that resonated deeply with its significance, as it had been christened “Lugar de Oro” or “Golden Place” by the indigenous Mapuche people. Spanning a vast expanse of 4,300 hectares, this Chilean wilderness served as the canvas upon which their dream would take shape. With meticulous care, they planted over 327 hectares of vines, each vine a symbol of their commitment to producing world-class wines that would rival the best in the industry. Thus, VIK vineyard was born, a testament to the harmonious blend of nature, science, and unwavering dedication, poised to make its mark on the global stage.
9. Valle Secreto Vineyards
.
Viña Valle Secreto, established in 2007 by two visionary groups of investors with strong ties to the food industry, has emerged as a shining star in the world of wine. Nestled in the picturesque Cachapoal Andes, a region renowned for its wines, this boutique winery has captured international attention for the exceptional quality and distinctive character of its offerings. What sets Valle Secreto apart in the industry is its unwavering dedication to innovation. With a long-term vision, the winery strives to create truly unique and differentiated products that resonate with consumers. They place great emphasis on preserving the distinct qualities of the valley, allowing these traits to shine through in every bottle they produce. As the global wine market continues to evolve, Viña Valle Secreto remains steadfast in its pursuit of crafting extraordinary wines that not only reflect the spirit of the land but also offer wine enthusiasts an exceptional and memorable experience.
10. Villard
.
Established in 1989 by Thierry Villard as Chile’s first family premium boutique wine company. Over the last three decades, it has consistently been recognized as one of the best producers of the Casablanca Valley. Over the last decade, using the Valley’s exceptional terroir and unique characteristics, the new generation has introduced innovating winemaking techniques to create new premium wines of structure and elegance.
One of the prime areas for cool-climate grapes is the Casablanca valley, only 70 kilometers West of Santiago and less than 25 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean. The cold Humboldt Current runs off the coast, so the sea produces a cooling effect, with morning fog and low temperatures that are expressed in our wines with bright acidity and fresh fruity aromas.
11. Viña Los Boldos
.
Viña Los Boldos is a family winery located in the exceptional soils of the Cachapoal Andes Valley in Chile. Their first vineyard was planted in 1936 in the Santa Amalia town, located in Requínoa in the VIth Region; years later, in 1991, Viña Los Boldos was created with the idea of producing high end wines, combining the extraordinary terroir of the Cachapoal Andes Valley and traditional French winemaking techniques. Later on, in 2008, Viña Los Boldos was acquired by the Sogrape Group; a very important Portuguese family company with production presence and own distribution in every single continent.
Their wines are crafted exclusively from their vineyards, where they strive for excellence every day, blending the vigor and grandeur of the Andes with the elegance and dedication of their European legacy. They believe in a responsible development and they guarantee a sustainable growth to the environment and the community that surrounds them. Due to this, in 2014 they were fully certified as Sustainable Wine of Chile in the three available aspects: Vineyard, Winery and Social aspect.
12. Lapostolle
.
Lapostolle’s rich history in the world of winemaking spans over a century, with a legacy that was established in 1827 by the Bournet Lapostolle family. The dedication and passion for crafting high-end wines and spirits have been passed down through generations, each contributing to the brand’s growth and success. Today, Lapostolle is under the capable leadership of the seventh generation, Charles de Bournet, who continues to carry the family’s tradition of producing exceptional wines.
Nestled in the picturesque town of Cunaco, near Santa Cruz, the Lapostolle winery stands as a testament to the brand’s commitment to quality. This historic winery, where Lapostolle was founded in 1994, still serves as the heart of their operations, producing all of their remarkable wines. The winery’s design, reminiscent of a traditional Chilean hacienda, not only pays homage to the region’s heritage but also houses state-of-the-art equipment. With a production capacity of 3,300,000 liters in stainless steel and French oak vats, as well as more than 3,500 French oak barrels, Lapostolle’s commitment to craftsmanship and quality is evident in every aspect of their winemaking process.
13. Puntí Ferrer
.
Antonio Puntí Ferrer always dreamt of dedicating his life to the production of fine wines, just as his father did when he arrived to Chile from Manresa – Spain.. Together with his wife Andrea Lagos, they started this project only with the will and conviction to succeed, with the goal of a better life for themselves and their family, in the country side, away from the chaos of the capital city where they lived back then.
In Rapel Valley, benefitting from the protected and fertile middle depression that generates between the Andes mountain range and the Coastal mountain range, is where their vineyards rest, el Huique (Colchagua) and Santa Amalia (Cachapoal). Here is where their grapes are born, generous fruits that are given to them by the earth, that give life to them precious wines.
14. Viña MontGras
.
In 1993 two brothers, Hernan and Eduardo Gras, began to build MontGras Winery, combining state-of-the-art technology with the talent and passion of an extraordinary group of people. In the tireless search to produce wines of the highest quality, MontGras vineyards have been planted in the main wine valleys of Chile, transforming the creation of each wine into a permanent journey, which runs through the heights of the Andes Mountains, through the warmth of the Central Valley, and reaches the cold waters of the Pacific Ocean.
MontGras winery invites you to experience a unique moment, in which you will learn more about its wines and culture through hands-on experiences and your senses. Located in the heart of the Colchagua Valley , the Visitor’s Centre is open year round to receive tourists from all over the world who are interested in learning more about wine, traditions and its history. Enjoy activities that include harvesting, wine tasting and even making your own wine. Tours available in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
15. Cono Sur
.
Established in 1993, Cono Sur Vineyards & Winery has been steadfast in its pursuit of crafting premium, unique, and innovative wines that encapsulate the essence of the new world. The company is characterized by three fundamental aspects: inventive application of technology, commitment to quality, and dedication to environmental sustainability. The name Cono Sur signifies the winery’s geographic position, highlighting its proud identity as a South American winery located in the southern cone, where Chile and its bountiful wine valleys lie along the western border.
These three foundational attributes – creative technology use, quality focus, and environmental respect – form the core identity of the company. Cono Sur has stretched the limits of viticulture and winemaking in Chile, by introducing a variety of grapes that were largely unknown to the country. The innovation extends not only to the wine itself but also to its packaging. In 1995, Cono Sur pioneered the use of synthetic corks in South America. In 2002, it was the first Chilean winery to utilize screwcaps for aromatic white wines, recognized as the best closure to maintain the wine’s youth, freshness, and avoid oxidation. From 2002 onward, considering the product performance, technical progression, and market feedback, the company transitioned most of its Whites, Rosés, Pinot Noirs, as well as Reds meant for brief cellaring, to advanced screwcap closures.
The best vineyards in Chile are a testament to the country’s dedication to the art of winemaking. From the sun-kissed vines of the Colchagua Valley to the cool coastal breezes of the Aconcagua region, each vineyard tells a unique story through its wines, rooted in tradition and innovation. Chile’s rich history and diverse geography have combined to create a dynamic and thriving wine industry, inviting enthusiasts and explorers alike to savor the fruits of this exceptional land. Whether you’re seeking a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon, a crisp Sauvignon Blanc, or a bold and intriguing Carmenere, Chile’s vineyards offer a taste of excellence and a journey of discovery for anyone with an appreciation for the art of winemaking.
