1. Harkamp

.

“Respectful, subtle-moving” is the motto of Hannes and Petra Harkamp. In Sausal in southern Styria, the two cultivate 20 hectares of vineyards according to biodynamic guidelines. Hannes Harkamp is particularly talented in producing elegant Sekts, using the traditional method of bottle fermentation. Here, too, biodynamic viticulture plays a decisive role.

In the future, it is important for Hannes to turn the quality screw even further. Where Harkamp is written on it, Harkamp should also be tasted: The style of the house, the special philosophy of wine and sparkling winemaking, and the origin should be unmistakably present in the glass.

2. Hermann Fink

.

Their family business was run for a long time as a mixed agricultural enterprise with arable farming and viticulture before they finally specialized in viticulture in the 90s. During this time, new grape varieties were planted, but also old vineyards continued to be cultivated. This is the reason why they have a very wide range of grape varieties at their disposal, which is rather unusual nowadays.

They cultivate a total area of 6.5 hectares of vineyards in and around Großhöflein, at the foot of the Leithagebirge – small but nice. Their assortment ranges from light to powerful white wines to full-bodied red wines and noble sweet predicates.

3. Krutzler

.

The town of Deutsch-Schützen is located in South Burgenland. It is the heart of this wine-growing region for its geographic location alone. From the cellar district, you have an amazing view over gently rolling hills almost exclusively planted with vines, and the nearby Pannonian Plain. For decades, a group of quality-conscious boutique producers has crafted, above all, red wines of worldwide reputation here.

The first high-quality wines were already bottled in 1966. Today, the family enterprise, which is run by Reinhold Krutzler in the 5th generation, still focuses on producing unique and distinct wines of high quality, which means: Priority is given to the perfect interplay of the best fruit, precise vineyard management, and little “technology” in the cellar rather than to single-vineyard sites.

4. Neukamp & Stadler

.

Over 40 years, the Stadler Family developed their successful winery with a 40-hectare cultivation area in Halbturn (Neusiedlersee/ Burgenland / Austria) Thomas Stadler developed his style in cellar management and vinification. With Günther Neukamp he wrote a short-time success story: The Neukamp & Stadler Pinot Gris Reserve Ried Lehendorf 2019 achieved immediately 95 Decanter points in 2022. Best Decanter rating ever for an “Austrian dry Pinot Gris” and a “Dry white wine from Burgenland” besides other international ratings.

Deliberate volume reduction in their vineyards and consistent selection before and during the grape harvest lead to maximum yields, which are a third of the legally permitted harvest quantities per hectare. For them, sustainable management in the vineyard means ensuring biodiversity and soil fertility, conserving resources, and treating the environment and their employees fairly. Harvests at the optimum ripening time, short transport routes from the vineyard to the winery, rapid cooling of the grapes on the farm.

5. Schuster

.

In the vineyard, the winegrowers dedicate a substantial amount of time to manual labor, tailoring their approach to the unique needs of each vineyard. Their work varies from year to year and is heavily influenced by the ever-changing weather conditions. What sets them apart is their unwavering commitment to organic vineyard management. They understand that by allowing nature to take its course, they can foster healthier and more vibrant vines. This philosophy is not just about sustainability; it’s a deep appreciation for the intricate relationship between the vines and the environment.

By actively tending to the vines year-round, these winegrowers are able to nurture the distinct character of each vineyard. They recognize that every location possesses its own identity, influenced by the soil, microclimate, and unique grape varieties. This meticulous attention to detail allows them to craft wines that authentically reflect the terroir, delivering a true sense of place in every bottle. It’s this dedication to individuality and the harmony between nature and the vine that defines the artistry of their winemaking.

6. Silvia Heinrich

.

As a typical family business, they at Thaller’s live, work, and think in terms of generations. At this family-run winery in Deutschkreutz, terroir is the basis for quality. The climate and soils here in the Blaufränkischland, offer the ideal conditions for robust and elegant red wines. Growing the vines is a pleasure for Silvia Heinrich – giving individual attention to each vine, sensing how every decision has its effect.

“The less, the better ” is the Heinrich family motto, using near-natural methods of cultivation. Not because it’s the latest trend but because consideration for nature is a must in order to be able to pass on the environment as intact as possible to the next generation. Numerous national and international accolades testify to the Heinrich family´s quality ambitions.

7. Umathum

.

The winery is mainly known for its authentic red wines but also produces some very fascinating white wines. The original Panasonic white grape variety Lindenblättriger has been revived in Burgenland, and the rare varieties of Gelber Traminer and Pinot Gris are also being cultivated.

The Austrian red wine varieties of Zweigelt, St. Laurent, and Blaufränkisch make up about 85 percent of the 30 hectares under cultivation. On both banks of Lake Neusiedl, a wide range of different soils is cultivated including slate, lime, clay, and gravel. The most important sites are Ried Hallebühl, Vom Stein, Haideboden, and Kirschgarten, where the only cultivated stone terrace site of the Burgenland is to be found.

8. Weingut Gager

.

These words of his father probably initiated the start and in 1984 his father began to build up the winery together with his mother Paula. As a career changer, he pressed just under 1,000 bottles of Blaufränkisch in the first year. This wine reflected all his passion, his passion, and their unmistakable GAGER style, and it immediately won the varietal award at the Falstaff wine awards and also took second place in the overall standings.

In the course of the 80s and 90s, the vineyards more and more replaced the cultivation of sugar beets and cereals, and wine became the focus of their family. This led his father to resign from his career as a master car mechanic at the age of 50 in order to devote 100% of his time to his great passion.

9. Weinschloss Thaller

.

Their wine castle is located high above Maierhofen, embedded in vineyards and blooming gardens, on the way to Fürstenfeld, in the thermal and volcanic region of Styria.

As a typical family business, they at Thaller’s live, work, and think in terms of generations. A good 30 years ago, the foundation for the pressing of excellent wines was laid here, laying the foundation for continuous and quality-oriented further development. Their winegrowers Katharina & Karl G. cultivate around 25 hectares of vineyards on gentle hills, with the focus being on red wines.

10. Winzer Krems

.

WINZER KREMS eG, with its rich history and extensive network of 900 dedicated winegrowers, has played a pivotal role in upholding the tradition of exceptional wine production in Austria. These winegrowers collectively cultivate grapes across 1200 hectares (approximately 2.570 acres) of land in the picturesque region of Krems and its surrounding areas. This cooperative effort, underpinned by a commitment to quality, has catapulted WINZER KREMS eG to the forefront of the Austrian wine industry.
