Bortolomiol

Treviso, Italy

Giuliano Bortolomiol, born in the charming district of Ponteggio, Valdobbiadene, played a pivotal role in revolutionizing Prosecco production. Coming from a well-respected family, Giuliano’s father, Guglielmo, held a significant position as a broker in the rural community.

Following the family tradition and driven by a natural inclination towards winemaking, Giuliano Bortolomiol enrolled in the Conegliano School of Oenology. However, his studies were abruptly interrupted in 1943 when he was called to serve during World War II. With hope in his heart, he eagerly anticipated his safe return home.

Immediately after the war, Giuliano resumed his studies and obtained the title of wine technician. He gained invaluable experience working in cellars across Friuli and Puglia. In 1946, driven by his passion and dedication to Prosecco, he founded the Prosecco Confraternity. This initiative embodied his spirit, encapsulated by the words “it is our duty to do something.”

.

.

“Duty” represented Giuliano’s deep-rooted attachment to the land and its people, a sense of belonging that translated into responsibility towards his work and fellow human beings. “To do” epitomized his relentless determination to take risks and dedicate his life to achieving remarkable results. And “something” symbolized his inventiveness, creativity, and ability to draw from tradition while embracing innovation.

In 1949, Giuliano officially established the Cantina Fratelli Bortolomiol alongside his brothers Labano and Guglielmo. This marked the beginning of a remarkable journey that positioned him as a visionary and innovator in the Valdobbiadene region. He transformed the winery into an iconic brand with a distinctive identity. Through research, knowledge, and intuition, Giuliano Bortolomiol meticulously selected grapes and adopted innovative winemaking methods, favoring the Martinotti-Charmat method. His efforts resulted in a dry Brut Prosecco that beautifully expressed the grape variety and its captivating aromas.

In 1960, Giuliano introduced the territory’s first Prosecco Brut, becoming the emblem of the winery. In 1962, recognizing the importance of collaboration, he joined forces with ten other producers to establish the Consortium for the Protection of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene Prosecco wine. Their aim was to regulate production and lay the foundation for obtaining the prestigious DOC designation (Denominazione d’Origine Controllata), which was eventually granted by the government in 1969.

Until 2000, Giuliano Bortolomiol played a prominent role in the production of Prosecco and the development of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore region. His legacy lives on through his wife, Ottavia, and their daughters Maria Elena, Elvira, Luisa, and Giuliana. These remarkable women, driven by their innate instincts, not only preserved their father’s achievements but also embraced new challenges to ensure that the revolution in Prosecco production continues.

.

.

Bortolomiol is a resilient and close-knit family, predominantly composed of women. The mother, a guiding force and soul of the company, along with the sisters, form the beating heart that leads and supports the family business in facing ongoing challenges to achieve excellence, efficiency, and competitiveness. Their approach is characterized by a strong commitment to the environment, sustainability, and respect for the territory. They prioritize energy conservation, waste reduction, and responsible water usage.

With pride and determination, Bortolomiol acknowledges that the world of wine is evolving, and they are at the forefront of this pink revolution. Their choices reflect creativity, regeneration, and environmental and social responsibility. They recognize that the territory is their most precious asset, deserving of their care, respect, and preservation for the benefit of future generations.

Giuliano Bortolomiol’s visionary spirit and his family’s unwavering commitment have made an indelible mark on Prosecco production. Their journey is a testament to the fact that passion, innovation, and sustainability can go hand in hand, creating a bright future for Prosecco and the Valdobbiadene region.
