Gérard Bertrand

Narbonne, France

In the vineyards of Château de Villemajou, located in the heart of the Corbières, Gérard Bertrand harvested his first grapes in 1975, igniting a lifelong passion for wine. Guided by his father Georges Bertrand for twelve years, Gérard honed his skills and embraced the values of performance and excellence that he had learned on the rugby fields.

Driven by his quest to unveil the finest terroirs of his region and showcase them to the world, Gérard Bertrand took over the reins of Domaine de Villemajou after his father’s untimely death in 1987. Five years later, he established the Gérard Bertrand wine company, dedicated to crafting a range of exceptional wines from the South of France. Subsequently, he acquired Domaine de Cigalus and Château Laville Bertrou, further expanding his portfolio.

In 2002, Gérard Bertrand acquired Château l’Hospitalet, situated in the breathtaking natural park of La Clape, between the historic city of Narbonne and the Mediterranean Sea. This acquisition marked a new chapter in his winemaking journey, providing a fresh dimension to his vision.

Since then, the story has continued to unfold, with the addition of prestigious terroirs that exemplify the diversity and richness of the Languedoc region. Domaine de l’Aigle, Château la Sauvageonne, Château la Soujeole, Clos d’Ora, Clos du Temple, Château des Karantes, Château Aigues-Vives, Cap Insula winery, Château des 2 Rocs, Château de Tarailhan, and Domaine de l’Estagnère have all enriched the Gérard Bertrand wine collection.

Early on, Gérard Bertrand recognized that viticulture in harmony with nature is essential to reveal the unique character of each terroir and produce exceptional wines. In 2002, he committed to the path of biodynamic viticulture at Cigalus, a practice that strengthens the vine’s balance with its environment.

This approach complements his longstanding commitment to quality. Today, within the group, a team of 300 individuals works passionately to unveil the great wines of the region. The vineyards, thriving with excellent health, and the magnified wines are a testament to the effectiveness of this holistic approach.

Certain plots within the Gérard Bertrand collection have been identified for their extraordinary potential, reflecting the distinctive history and age of the exceptional terroirs. These plots are recognized as the Grands Crus of the South of France. Among them, Hospitalitas, La Forge, Le Viala, and L’Aigle Royal stand out, with the emblematic Clos d’Ora taking center stage. In 2012, the first vintage of Clos d’Ora was vinified in a humble setting on the heights of La Livinière. The Syrah and Carignan grapes primarily come from ancient vines, while the Mourvèdre and Grenache were planted in 2000. Clos d’Ora is a wine that embodies memory and identity, conveying a message of peace, love, and harmony.

The Gérard Bertrand Group continues its commitment to sustainable development, taking a significant stride forward by conducting a carbon footprint analysis. This proactive approach reflects the growing expectations of consumers and the urgent global need to mitigate the adverse effects of greenhouse gases on the climate.
