Nath. Johnston & Fils

Bordeaux, France

Nathaniel Johnston & Fils, a distinguished name in Bordeaux wine history, has been rooted in the heart of Bordeaux since the early 18th century. The Johnston family’s legacy began in 1734 when William Johnston, of Scottish descent, established the firm of “Nathaniel Johnston & Fils” in Bordeaux. Initially involved in commission-based shipping, the company later ventured into aging “New French Claret” in its own cellars.

The true expansion of Maison Johnston occurred in the 19th century. By 1804, their cellars spanned an impressive 15,000 square meters, with the capacity to hold 25,000 barrels and 2 million bottles of wine. In 1840, Nathaniel Johnston & Fils became part owners of the prestigious Château Latour. Further acquisitions followed, including Château Ducru-Beaucaillou and Château Dauzac in 1865.

.

During the Second Empire, Nathaniel Johnston & Fils exported wines to various destinations, including England, North and South America, Canada, and imperial Russia. In 1876, their export figures reached a record high of 1 million pounds sterling. However, it wasn’t until the early 1950s that the company experienced a lasting recovery, thanks to the hard work, perseverance, and dedication of Nathaniel’s sons: Archibald (1968), Denis (1974), and Ivanhoé (1997). The support of loyal clients and owners also played a significant role in the company’s success.

Today, the 10th generation of the Johnston family, represented by Laure (Denis’ daughter) and Thomas (Archibald’s son), continues the family’s passion for fine wine. Their goals remain the same: to sell and promote quality wines to major importers worldwide, as well as to large companies and loyal private customers in France.

.

Located in the historic Chartrons district, the heart of Bordeaux’s wine trade, Nathaniel Johnston & Fils embraces both tradition and innovation. The company is committed to upholding traditional values in the spirit of winemaking while employing modern and innovative approaches to commercial matters and viticultural techniques.

The Johnston family has always prioritized quality production, focusing primarily on top-tier wines. Wines stored in their cellars undergo rigorous selection based on frequent tastings. While specializing in a complete range of classified growths, Nathaniel Johnston & Fils also offers other château wines that consistently deliver reliable quality. The firm’s close relationships with châteaux are built on years of trust and collaboration. Maison Johnston diligently monitors the wines it sells, regularly visiting wine estates, overseeing quality during harvest, and conducting comparative tastings.

.

In France, the firm maintains a core group of loyal private customers who provide valuable feedback on new wines selected by Nathaniel Johnston & Fils. While private customers represent a portion of the firm’s activity in France, the majority of their wines are sold to large companies. On the export front, Nathaniel Johnston & Fils primarily collaborates with major importers who have established reputations for professionalism and dedication to distributing Bordeaux wines. Exporting represents the core business of Nathaniel Johnston & Fils, allowing them to share the great Bordeaux wines with consumers worldwide.

Today, Nathaniel Johnston & Fils aims to strengthen and maintain partnership relationships with importers. As ambassadors of the traditional world of Bordeaux’s great wines, they are committed to providing quality service across the globe, perpetuating the rich heritage and excellence associated with Bordeaux wines.
