Tenuta delle Terre Nere

Sicilia, Italy

Established on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, within the prestigious wine-producing region between Solicchiata and Randazzo, lies the remarkable estate of Tenuta delle Terre Nere. This enchanting estate spans approximately 45 hectares, encompassing 29 plots and nine Contradas, or crus, which are historically recognized as the finest in the appellation for producing exceptional red wines.

What sets Tenuta delle Terre Nere apart is the remarkable diversity of its soils and altitudes. From one cru to another, and even within the same cru, the soils exhibit significant variations. Similarly, the vineyards are situated at elevations ranging from 600 to 1000 meters above sea level. Among the vineyards, there are approximately 7 hectares that have been recently planted, while the rest boast a venerable age of 50 to 100 years. A select portion of less than one hectare has survived the devastating phylloxera epidemic and stands ungrafted, surpassing the remarkable age of 140 years.

This ancient vineyard, located in the esteemed Contrada di Calderara Sottana, bears witness to three centuries of history, expressing the essence of Nerello and its unique terroir. Aptly named “La Vigna di Don Peppino,” it pays homage to the farmer who diligently nurtured it with infinite affection and expertise for nearly seven decades. Thanks to his unwavering dedication, this vineyard has reached us in all its splendid health and vitality.

In 2002, the inaugural year of production and bottling at Tenuta delle Terre Nere, a bold declaration graced the back labels of their first bottles, defining the Etna area as the “Burgundy of the Mediterranean.” This juxtaposition may seem paradoxical at first glance, with Sicily located in the southernmost reaches of Europe. However, the exceptional climate of Etna sets it apart, making it an exception within the region and akin to an island in the sea. The weather that embraces the slopes of Europe’s largest and most active volcano is truly unique within the context of Sicily.

Tenuta delle Terre Nere’s wines are a testament to the singular terroir and climatic conditions of Etna. The volcanic soils, enriched with abundant silicon, impart distinctive characteristics to the grapes, resulting in wines that captivate the senses. Winemaker Marco de Grazia adheres to organic and biodynamic principles, allowing the vineyards’ inherent qualities to shine through in every bottle.

Traditional winemaking techniques, such as aging in large oak casks and amphorae, further enhance the expression of the terroir, yielding wines of exceptional elegance, complexity, and finesse.

The estate’s widespread presence across more than 70 countries worldwide, coupled with Marco de Grazia’s pioneering approach, has firmly placed it on the radar of the world’s most significant wine scene today.

As you explore the wines of Tenuta delle Terre Nere, you embark on a journey that showcases the exceptional nature of Etna. Each sip reveals the legacy of generations past, the devotion of farmers who have tended these vines for centuries, and the captivating allure of a terroir unlike any other. Tenuta delle Terre Nere stands as a beacon of excellence, drawing wine enthusiasts into the mesmerizing world of Etna’s remarkable wines.
