St. Supéry Estate

Napa Valley, California, United States

Founded in 1920 by Robert-Elie Skalli in Algeria, St. Supéry Estate Vineyards and Winery has evolved into a renowned wine producer with a rich history spanning over a century. From its humble beginnings in North Africa to its current presence in Napa Valley, St. Supéry has remained dedicated to crafting exceptional wines while prioritizing sustainability and environmental stewardship.

The Skalli family’s involvement in the wine industry expanded in 1961 when Robert-Elie’s son, Francis Skalli, established the family estate, Terra Vecchia, on the picturesque island of Corsica. This venture was accompanied by the founding of a wine import company. Later, in the 1970s, Robert Skalli, son of Francis, embarked on a journey to Napa Valley, California, with a vision of creating prestigious wines in the renowned region. Simultaneously, he built a winery in Sète, France.

In 1982, Robert Skalli acquired Dollarhide, a 1,500-acre cattle ranch located in the northeastern mountains of Napa Valley. This stunning property eventually became home to St. Supéry’s vineyards, comprising nearly 500 acres of estate-grown grapes. Additionally, the Skalli family purchased 56 acres in Rutherford, where the winery stands today.

St. Supéry Estate Vineyards and Winery officially opened its doors on Highway 29 in 1989, welcoming wine enthusiasts to experience their exceptional offerings. The commitment to sustainability became a cornerstone of their operations, leading to the winery’s certification as Napa Green Land in 2008.

A significant milestone occurred in 2015 when the Skalli Family decided to sell St. Supéry Estate Vineyards and Winery to Chanel, Inc. This partnership allowed Chanel to expand its wine portfolio, which already included esteemed Châteaux in France. St. Supéry’s acquisition presented Chanel with a unique opportunity to own a notable Napa Valley vineyard.

Today, St. Supéry Estate Vineyards and Winery continues to produce high-quality wines without compromising their commitment to sustainability. As one of the few 100% estate wineries in Napa Valley, they have complete control over the grape-growing and winemaking processes, ensuring meticulous attention to detail from berry to bottle.

The winery’s Rutherford Estate Vineyard, situated in the celebrated Rutherford wine-growing region, spans 35 acres and boasts a Mediterranean climate. With ideal soil types and an elevation of 154 feet, this vineyard is perfect for cultivating red Bordeaux varieties, such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot, and cabernet franc. These grapes contribute to St. Supéry’s exquisite single vineyard bottlings, including their renowned Rutherford Estate Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.

Another remarkable property, the Dollarhide Estate Ranch, covers over 1,530 acres within Napa Valley. With vineyard elevations ranging from 600 to 1,100 feet above sea level, diverse soil series, and microclimates, Dollarhide offers an exceptional environment for growing Bordeaux grape varieties. The winemaking and vineyard team carefully selects ideal vineyard sites within this expansive estate, matching soils with the right rootstock, clone selection, and cultivation practices. This approach results in a wide array of fruit characteristics that contribute to the production of St. Supéry’s estate sauvignon blanc, cabernet sauvignon blends, and Dollarhide Estate single vineyard wines.

Through their unwavering commitment to quality winemaking and sustainable practices, St. Supéry Estate Vineyards and Winery has solidified its place among Napa Valley’s most respected wine producers. With a legacy that began in Algeria and expanded across continents, St. Supéry continues to honor its heritage while crafting remarkable wines that showcase the terroir of Napa Valley, leaving a lasting impression on wine enthusiasts worldwide.
