Harvey River Estate, owned and operated by the Sorgiovanni family, is a renowned winery nestled in the picturesque Harvey region of Western Australia. With a rich history in the south-west agricultural industry, the Sorgiovanni family has left an indelible mark on the region’s farming heritage.
The story of Harvey River Estate begins in 1928 when Kevin’s father, an Italian immigrant, settled on the banks of the Harvey River and started cultivating orchards. Over time, the Sorgiovanni orchards flourished, eventually leading to the establishment of Harvey Fresh, one of Western Australia’s largest milk and juice processors. While actively involved in the family business, Kevin continued to expand his agricultural endeavors, cultivating vineyards and raising cattle in the area.

In 1999, Harvey River Estate embarked on a new venture, transitioning from vineyards to wine production under its own label. The winery’s maiden vintage was crafted in 2000, and it quickly garnered attention and acclaim. In particular, the 2009 Joseph River Estate Cabernet Sauvignon received the prestigious Jimmy Watson award, a testament to the winery’s commitment to producing exceptional wines. Leveraging his export experience, Kevin also spearheaded the expansion of the winery’s presence in international markets.
In 2015, Harvey River Estate further cemented its position as a leading winery with the opening of a modern, purpose-built cellar door, warehouse, and administration building. The estate’s vineyards, located just 800 meters away on Fifth Street, span nearly 50 acres and boast plantings of Chardonnay, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon. These vineyards are among the largest in the region and play a pivotal role in the winery’s quest for excellence.

At the heart of Harvey River Estate’s winemaking philosophy is Stuart Pierce, the dedicated winemaker who joined the team in 2005. Stuart’s approach centers on crafting wines that captivate the palate and reflect the unique characteristics of the region. He adopts a hands-on approach, closely collaborating with the viticultural team to monitor fruit quality and ensure the vineyards are nurtured to their full potential. Stuart’s unwavering commitment to quality has been rewarded with numerous accolades, including the esteemed Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy in 2010.
