Quinta do Vallado is a historic wine estate in the Douro Valley, dating back to 1716. The estate was once owned by Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, an industry icon who revolutionized Portuguese winemaking with her innovative techniques. Today, the estate is managed by Antónia’s descendants, who continue to produce a diverse collection of red, white, and rosé wines, as well as white, tawny, and ruby Ports.
The estate’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is evident in its wine production. The estate has been farmed organically since 2009 and gained certification in 2015. The state-of-the-art winery and cellar combine technological advancement with traditional methods, such as treading the grapes in granite lagares, that honor the estate’s impressive heritage. Field blends and single varietal wines showcase local grapes, including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Tinto, Sousão, and Moscatel Galego Branco.
Guests can immerse themselves in the estate’s work by participating in the harvest and treading grapes by foot, taking blending and viticulture workshops, and more. Alternatively, they can relax and unwind in one of the estate’s two boutique hotels. The eighteenth-century manor house houses five traditional suites, while the newer wing offers a sleek, modern feel with eight rooms. For a secluded getaway, Casa do Rio, an ecologically-friendly hotel made almost entirely of wood, is located on the estate’s vineyard site in the Douro Superior. The hotel is suspended out of the hillside of a gorge, offering stunning views of the river and the surrounding area.
In addition to taking in the beautiful scenery, guests can also partake in a variety of land and water activities. Boat, walking, or jeep tours are available, along with cycling, fishing, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, cookery classes, picnics, and a spa that uses essential oils from the estate itself.
Quinta do Vallado seamlessly blends tradition and modernity, offering guests an unforgettable experience in one of Portugal’s most beautiful wine regions. With its historic estate, commitment to sustainability, and diverse collection of wines, Quinta do Vallado is a must-visit destination for wine lovers and travelers alike.
