Buil & Giné

Priorat, Spain

Xavi Buil Giné, representing the sixth generation of vine growers in the Priorat region, holds a deep commitment to his ancestral home. For centuries, his family has toiled in the challenging terrain of Priorat, marked by rocky soils, limited rainfall, and steep slopes known as “Costers.” It is a land that demands resilience and determination.

The legacy of Buil & Giné Wines dates back over 2000 years when their ancestors began cultivating vineyards, olive groves, almond trees, and hazelnut trees in the region. This rich history, combined with the hardships faced, has instilled in Xavi Buil Giné and his family a profound appreciation for their heritage.

The family’s dedication to Priorat is evident in the contributions made by Xavi’s grandfather, Joan Giné. Serving as the president of the Falset Cooperative during the 1950s and 1960s, Joan Giné was a pivotal figure in the region. He was also instrumental in establishing the Associació Docent Priorat, which built the first primary school in Falset and Catalonia’s inaugural school of oenology.

Xavi’s father continued the legacy by serving on the board of the school for 12 years and assuming the role of President of the Priorat Government during the emergence of the new Priorat movement in the late 1980s. This dedication to the region’s development and growth inspired Xavi to play an active role in shaping its future. With a desire to contribute to the salvation of Priorat, Xavi embarked on a new adventure as a young student. Recognizing the significance of wine within their culture and way of life, he sought to harness the family’s knowledge and the aspirations of local farmers to create exceptional wines that embody the essence of Priorat.

Established in Gratallops, the heart of the Priorat region, Buil & Giné has been producing wines with DOQ Priorat since 1996. Their international vision aligns with a steadfast commitment to preserving and sharing the region’s lifestyle and historical legacy.

Embracing their role as caretakers of the land, Buil & Giné remains dedicated to nurturing and fortifying their vines while respecting the environment, culture, and people of Priorat. They seamlessly blend the wisdom and practices inherited from their ancestors with innovative techniques. Buil & Giné’s philosophy, “Wine is made in the vineyard,” underscores their meticulous approach. By tending to the vines with utmost care and respecting the terroir, they yield grapes of unparalleled quality. The resulting wines are telling the story of the region and the specific vintage.

It is a testament to their deep roots in Priorat and their unwavering dedication to preserving its heritage for generations to come.
