Champagne Pierre Gimonnet & Fils

Épernay, France

In the beginning, the Gimonnet family were vine growers in Cuis, delivering their harvest to Champagne merchants. They were known as “farmers and winegrowers,” and their ancestors produced some wine, likely for personal consumption. However, it was during the interwar period that the winemaking activity of the estate truly began.

The economic depression of 1929 marked a turning point, as selling grapes to merchants became less viable due to inadequate prices. It was in the early 1930s that Pierre, the family’s grandfather, published the first price list. This unique list showcased a diverse range of offerings, including fresh grape juice, “still wine from Champagne,” and “cru champagnes.” One particular wine hailed from Roualles, a renowned lieu-dit within the Cuis terroir. This unconventional pricing strategy shed light on the challenges faced by the Champagne vineyard during that time.

Michel Gimonnet, Pierre’s son, joined the family operation in 1955 and revolutionized winemaking. Driven by his passion and scientific approach, Michel became a pioneer in parcel vinification using small stainless-steel tanks. This meticulous method ensured the respect for each origin, traceability, and precise knowledge of each “lieu-dit.” Recognizing the uniqueness of the family vineyard, Michel’s peasant common sense led him to craft Champagnes that exuded a soul deeply rooted in the land.

Under Michel’s guidance, the Pierre Gimonnet & Fils style was born, reflecting the distinct characteristics of the Côte des Blancs. These Champagnes were known for their complexity, balance, finely crafted elegance, and unmistakable mineral freshness. Today, the estate remains in the hands of the Gimonnet family, co-directed by Olivier and Didier Gimonnet, two of Michel Gimonnet and Françoise Gimonnet Larmandier’s four children. Their unwavering dedication has transformed the estate into an exceptional domain specializing in “great Chardonnay wines.”

Retaining their ancestral spirit, Olivier and Didier firmly believe that owning the vineyards is paramount to maintaining control over the crafting of their wines. With precise knowledge of every plot and vine’s ability to produce specific characteristics, they harness the perfect understanding of their multiple vineyard plots. This expertise, passed down through generations, combined with their pursuit of perfection and adaptability to climate changes, has been the secret behind the estate’s consistent quality for decades.

The Gimonnet signature can be defined by three essential qualities that emanate from common sense. Firstly, Champagne must reveal its Origins, showcasing the astonishing minerality derived from the chalky soil. Secondly, their Champagnes are crafted for pleasure, offering vibrant freshness, balance, complexity, and elegance that evokes intense emotions and invites further exploration. Lastly, Champagne is a remarkable aging wine, capable of developing and maturing over time. Thanks to precise blends and the contribution of their exceptional terroirs, Gimonnet Champagnes possess remarkable aging potential.

Dedicating themselves to producing only “blanc de blancs” from the Côte des Blancs, including the “base brut,” the Gimonnet family stands out in Champagne, as this focus is a rarity. Their commitment to excellence has earned them recognition as “specialists in blanc de blancs Champagnes” among their peers. Their wines are truly distinguishable and carry the essence of the Gimonnet legacy within every bottle.
