Bodegas Pascual

Burgos, Spain

The philosophy of Bodegas Pascual’s wines and their commitment to “good making” trace back to the XIVth century, within the ancient underground cellar owned by the Pascual family. Situated in Fuentelcésped town, in the province of Burgos, this cellar became the birthplace of their winemaking legacy. Generation after generation, the Pascual ancestors devoted their efforts and determination to transform vineyard must into the nectar of the Gods, passing down their folklore and traditions.

In 1986, Bodegas Pascual’s history officially began in Fuentelcésped, nestled within the renowned Appellation of Origin “Ribera del Duero.” This region, known for producing 85% of the wine grapes under this appellation, provided the ideal backdrop for the winery. Bodegas Pascual beautifully blends modernity and tradition, as the present-day winery stands adjacent to a XIVth century underground cellar. Carved deep into the rock, this cellar features six galleries reaching 16 meters below ground, maintaining a constant temperature of 11ºC that favors wine aging.

Diodoro Pascual, a wine enthusiast, was the owner of this underground cellar. His passion for wine inspired those around him and planted the seed for Félix, Enrique, and their friend Gregorio Pascual to establish the winery in 1986. The juxtaposition of the ancient underground cellar and the contemporary octagonal-shaped winery creates a captivating contrast. Situated at the entrance to Fuentelcésped, the winery boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including stainless steel vats capable of fermenting 500,000 liters of must, 800 barrels made of 50% French and 50% American oak, and an aging room meticulously designed to house up to 2,000 barrels under optimum conditions. These facilities enable the application of modern oenological techniques.

Stretching over 35 hectares, Bodegas Pascual’s vineyards are a testament to meticulous care and dedication. The vineyards consist of wire-trained and bush vines, ranging from 10-year-old to pre-phylloxera/ungrafted vines that have stood for over a century. All vineyards fall within the Appellation of Origin “Ribera del Duero,” with the renowned “Tempranillo,” “Tinto Fino,” or “Tinta del País” grape variety taking center stage. The vineyards are tended with love and attention, avoiding weed-killers and aggressive treatments to preserve the quality not only of the selected vineyard wines and limited-edition releases but also the oak-aged creations.

Bodegas Pascual exercises meticulous control over the production, monitoring the vineyards aged between 65 and 100 years on a daily basis. The winery recognizes that great grapes are the cornerstone of great wines. Therefore, every aspect of the winemaking process, from planting to harvest, is executed with utmost care. Cultural labors, pruning techniques, and vineyard management are conducted meticulously, ensuring high concentrations of mineral and nutritional elements from the soil. As a result, only the highest quality grapes find their way into the winery.

.

.

Rooted in ancestral practices and fueled by a deep appreciation for winemaking, Bodegas Pascual remains committed to its mission of honoring the magnificence of the vineyards that have shaped the town of Fuentelcésped. With south-facing vineyards, clayey-calcareous soil, and an elevation of 850 meters above sea level, the vineyards benefit from an ideal environment. The region experiences moderate rainfall, concentrated in spring and autumn, while the mist and fog from the Duero River provide an additional source of humidity.

As you uncork a bottle of Bodegas Pascual wine, you embark on a timeless journey, immersing yourself in the richness of centuries-old winemaking traditions. Each sip encapsulates the spirit of our land, the passion of our winemakers, and the unwavering dedication of the entire Bodegas Pascual family.
