Before the creation of Barolo wine, the nebbiolo grape variety, which is the foundation of this exquisite beverage, offered a different taste experience. The significance of nebbiolo as a grape variety was recognized even in the late 18th century when Thomas Jefferson, who would later become the President of the United States, encountered it during his stay at Hôtel d’Angleterre in Turin. In his travel journal, Jefferson described nebbiolo as “As silky as Madeira, as astringent as Bordeaux and as brisk as Champagne.” These words captured the unique qualities of nebbiolo, highlighting its complexity and allure.

However, it was through the intuition of Marchesa Giulia di Barolo that Barolo wine acquired its distinctive character. Realizing the potential of nebbiolo and aiming to enhance its flavor profile, Marchesa Giulia di Barolo made a pivotal decision. She constructed new cellars that would enable the production of wine in large casks, safeguarded from the cold temperatures of late autumn. This marked a turning point in the history of Barolo, as it allowed the wine to develop a full-bodied and stable nature, elevating its status to that of a noble wine. Even today, Barolo’s legacy lives on in the centuries-old oak casks that have witnessed the transformation of this remarkable wine.
