Legras & Haas

Chouilly, France

LEGRAS & HAAS, a renowned Champagne house established in 1991, is a family-run business led by three brothers: Rémi, Olivier, and Jérôme Legras. Together, they are dedicated to creating genuine and balanced wines that capture the essence of their family’s heritage and the unique terroir of the Champagne region.

At the heart of the operation is François Legras, whose unwavering commitment to his craft is evident in his daily rituals. Every morning, he diligently reads the newspapers before embarking on a tireless inspection of the family vineyards. With a deep sense of dedication, François traverses the vine rows, contemplating the future and envisioning the evolution of the house. His insights and perspectives greatly influence the work carried out by his sons, shaping the winemaking process and ensuring the continuity of their family legacy.

.

François’s connection to the land and his craft runs deep. Apart from a few years at boarding school in Reims and his military service, he has never strayed far from his beloved village. From the age of 16, he eagerly assisted his father in the vineyards and fields, honing his winemaking and cellar master skills under his guidance.

Brigitte Haas, a warm and charismatic presence, plays an integral role in sharing the family’s passion for precise and elegant wines with visitors to the House in Chouilly. While she humbly avoids considering herself the owner of the property, Brigitte embraces her responsibility as a guardian of the family’s lifetime work, seeing her role as one of passing the baton to her children. Her unwavering devotion and commitment to high standards continue to shape their choices and decisions at the Domaine.

.

Brigitte’s journey into the world of Champagne began in the 1960s when she responded to an advertisement in the Alsace Local Newspaper. Driving her old white Citroen DS, she arrived in Champagne and secured a position as a trilingual assistant at a wine domaine. Immersed in the world of Champagne, she developed a profound passion for the region and never left. Fascinated by the beauty of the champagne hills, she purchased her first vineyard in Epernay in 1974 and embarked on her viticultural education.

Among LEGRAS & HAAS’ notable cuvées is the Brut Intuition, which represents the quintessence of the Maison’s style and a deeply personal approach. This signature blend captures the incredible diversity of the family estate. The chardonnay contributes finesse, elegance, and ethereal citrus notes, while the pinot meunier adds a smooth, exotic mouthfeel. The pinot noir brings structure and intensity to the composition, resulting in a harmonious and balanced champagne.

 .

 .

The production of LEGRAS & HAAS champagnes is characterized by meticulous care and attention to ensure excellent potential for bottle aging. Over time, the ripe fruit aromas intensify, and the wine softens, creating a sublime drinking experience. However, to fully appreciate the freshness of Brut Intuition, it is recommended to consume it within 2 or 3 years.

Another remarkable offering from the house is the Brut Rosé, which showcases the artistry of LEGRAS & HAAS in crafting a champagne bursting with red fruit flavors. This exquisite blend, made exclusively from first press wines, showcases the finesse and elegance of perfectly preserved pinot noirs. The structured base is derived from the red Les Riceys wines, while chardonnays from Chouilly and Vitry contribute freshness and balance, allowing the pinots to shine.
