Champagne Mailly

For centuries, Mailly Champagne has held a distinguished position among the Champagne Villages, as evidenced by writings from the eighteenth century. In André Julien’s influential work, “Topographie de Tous les Vignobles Connus” (The topography of all known vineyards), published in 1816, Mailly was classified as “First Class” among the Marne Villages for the exceptional quality of its red grapes. This prestigious recognition placed Mailly in an elite group of six villages.
The subsequent century witnessed the establishment of the first échelle des crus, a rating system that determines grape prices in the Champagne region. In 1911 and 1920, the Syndicat du Commerce des Vins de Champagne, in collaboration with Champagne growers, defined the criteria for this system. Mailly proudly earned the distinction of being classified as 100% Grand Cru, a status it has enjoyed almost uninterrupted since then.

Champagne Mailly is a cooperative that thrives in the renowned Grand Cru village of Mailly. Founded in 1929 by a group of growers, this cooperative is home to approximately 80 dedicated individuals who meticulously tend to the village’s precious Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines. What sets Champagne Mailly apart is its unique distinction as one of the few Champagne producers that exclusively sources all its grapes from the prestigious Grand Cru vineyards.
Situated in the heart of the Montagne de Reims nature park, Mailly Grand Cru encompasses over 70 hectares of vineyards exclusively located in the Village of Mailly Champagne. The vineyard is predominantly planted with 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay, a combination that beautifully blends the refreshing qualities of Pinot Noir with the finesse of Chardonnay. The unique orientations of the vineyards, facing all four points of the compass, impart distinct characteristics to the Mailly Grand Cru terroir.

In recognition of our unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, all of our vineyards have been VDC (Viticulture Durable en Champagne) and HVE (Haute Valeur Environmentale) certified since 2021. This acknowledgment reinforces our dedication to responsible viticulture and environmental management. Over the years, we have undertaken significant initiatives to enhance our landscapes, soils, and vineyards. These efforts include the planting of nearly 1000 meters of hedges, the establishment of beehives, and the cultivation of orchards.
Embracing natural remedies has become integral to our practices, with the increasing use of plant infusions and herb teas. Mechanical weeding and cover cropping have become routine, minimizing the use of chemical herbicides. We remain committed to the continuous improvement of our vineyards and the preservation of our environment.
