Domaine Hurst

Turckheim, France

The roots of Domaine Hurst trace back to the 17th century, firmly embedded in the heritage of a family that has been a part of Turckheim for generations. It was in 1926 that the estate began to flourish, gradually acquiring plots of land, particularly in the esteemed Grand Cru Brand vineyard. Fueled by an unwavering passion for winemaking, the men of the family dedicated themselves to cultivating the vineyard, vinifying distinct parcel cuvées, and establishing a direct connection with customers. In 1989, the family estate found its new guardians in Armand Hurst and his wife Nicole, the third generation to carry forward this esteemed tradition.

Armand, a true winegrower at heart, embarked on an ambitious endeavor in 1991 – the construction of a state-of-the-art cellar in Turckheim, just outside the historic center. As part of this process, century-old historic oak casks were meticulously dismantled and reassembled in the new cellar, ensuring the continuation of the house’s signature style for the next three decades. This modern facility became an invaluable tool, safeguarding the time-honored techniques and winemaking expertise of the estate.

In 2016, with a steadfast commitment to upholding the pursuit of excellence, Marc Rinaldi, an ardent connoisseur of Alsace’s Grands Crus, stepped in to secure the future of the estate. With the unwavering support of Armand and Nicole Hurst, he endeavored to convert the entire 12-hectare vineyard to biodynamic practices. This decision injected a renewed energy into the estate, attracting a dynamic team from prestigious Alsatian vineyards. Collaborating harmoniously, they combined their expertise to script a compelling new chapter in the estate’s history.

A significant milestone was achieved in 2019, as Domaine Hurst proudly obtained certification from Demeter for their first vintage produced under biodynamic principles. Encompassing a total of 12 hectares, with over 7 hectares situated on the magnificent Grand Cru Brand terroir, the estate boasts vineyards predominantly located on hillsides. These vineyards are home to ancient vines, some of which have thrived for over 40 years, while others have endured for an impressive 70 years.

.

.

The commitment to biodynamic practices is steadfast throughout the entire vineyard since 2016. Every aspect of vineyard management is geared towards achieving grapes of unparalleled quality that genuinely reflect the unique characteristics and finesse of the terroir.

In the cellar, the philosophy remains rooted in utmost respect for the winemaking process. This is achieved through the meticulous pressing of whole grapes, fermentations guided by cosmic influences and lunar cycles, and extended aging on lees, enabling the wines to naturally stabilize and mature before being bottled.

.

.

The ultimate objective of Domaine Hurst is to craft wines that are pure, authentic, and free from artificial manipulation. By embracing biodynamics, they strive to create wines that are a true reflection of their origins, ensuring that every bottle encapsulates the essence and integrity of their terroirs.

With a rich history, a passionate team, and an unwavering commitment to quality, Domaine Hurst stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the family’s winemaking tradition. As they continue to tread the path of excellence, the wines of Domaine Hurst promise to captivate the palates of wine enthusiasts, offering an unforgettable sensory experience that celebrates the unique character of the Alsatian terroir.
