Capanelle

Gaiole in Chianti, Italy

In 1974, businessman Raffaele Rossetti moved to a 16th-century Villa in Gaiole in Chianti, a region renowned for Chianti Classico. He had a deep understanding of the area and soil, leading him to plant a vineyard spanning 3.5 hectares. Rossetti focused exclusively on cultivating local grape varieties like Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, and Malvasia. In addition, he set aside two hectares for growing olive trees.

During the same period, the Villa underwent significant renovations. Rossetti had a vision of creating a dedicated tasting room, complete with original furniture, including an impressive six-meter-long table. A modern kitchen was also installed, where talented chefs would skillfully pair traditional and innovative recipes with Capannelle wines. To meet the winery’s requirements, a state-of-the-art cellar was built, equipped with cutting-edge technologies.

Capannelle’s journey began in 1974 when Raffaele Rossetti moved to a historic Villa in Gaiole in Chianti. In 1975, they released their first wine, Capannelle, which quickly gained recognition for its exceptional quality. The use of modern techniques and meticulous vineyard management contributed to its success. French oak barrels were introduced in 1977, giving Capannelle wines a distinct and sought-after style. They released their first barrel-aged Chardonnay in 1988.

Inspired by the exceptional 1988 vintage, Rossetti fulfilled his dream of blending Capannelle Sangiovese with Tuscan Merlot. The collaboration with Avignonesi led to the creation of 50&50. In 1990, Capannelle released Solare, a remarkable wine crafted in collaboration with Giorgio Pinchiorri, owner of Enoteca Pinchiorri.

In 1997, Capannelle was acquired by James B. Sherwood, the founder of Orient Express Hotels, Train & Cruises (now Belmond Hotels). Sherwood aimed to establish Capannelle as a globally recognized brand. Under his ownership, the winery expanded significantly, acquiring two additional vineyards: “Il Trebbio” spanning 7 hectares and “Vertine” encompassing 3 hectares. The cellar’s size was also nearly doubled, increasing from its initial 600 m2 to its current size of 1050 m2.

Today, Capannelle boasts a total of 35 hectares, 16 of which are dedicated to vineyards. Under the guidance of winemaker Simone Monciatti, the winery produces five distinct wines. Capannelle wines are now distributed in 35 countries worldwide and have found their place in luxury hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants, and premier wine shops. The sales network comprises 30% in Italy, 30% in export markets, and 10% from private customers.

.

Capannelle is not just a winery but also a year-round Wine Resort. The resort boasts five luxurious rooms, providing top-notch amenities for discerning guests. From a panoramic pool to cozy fireplaces in two living rooms, guests can unwind and enjoy the stunning terrace and English-style garden, offering breathtaking views of Chianti Classico’s gentle hills.

With a rich history and a commitment to exceptional wines, Capannelle continues to impress. The legacy of Raffaele Rossetti, the expertise of winemaker Simone Monciatti, and the visionary leadership of James B. Sherwood ensures that Capannelle will make an enduring impact in the world of winemaking. Guests can expect an unforgettable experience at the Wine Resort, where luxury and outstanding wines come together seamlessly.
