Bot River, South Africa

Gabriëlskloof is the realisation of a dream for South African Bernhard Heyns, who searched for several years to find the unique piece of land that, in his words, would “root him to the spot”. In 2001 he found what was then a canola farm named ‘Avontuur’ and the penny dropped. It was soon obvious that the site had the potential to make high-quality wines with a distinctive character, and so it has proved. Gabrielskloof has been owned and run by the Heyns family ever since. That family has since grown to include members of the local community, several of whom have risen through the ranks to senior positions at the farm.

The vision at Gabriëlskloof is to produce fine wines that reflect the complexity, richness and diversity of their unique terroir. They strive to do this in the most environmentally friendly way possible, showing respect for their region’s biodiversity at all times.

Their soils do not allow for high yields and all the vineyards on the property have been tended to with the utmost care since day one. All vineyard work is done by hand and sustainability takes precedence in every decision made in the vineyard, as is reflected by their status as a Biodiversity and Wine Champion.

SYRAH 2022
Gabriëlskloof Range

The Syrah is part of the Gabriëlskloof range of wines, together with our Rosebud, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and The Blend. This range offers a selection of boutique-style wines that always over-deliver on quality and value. The 2022 harvest benefitted from good winter rains and full dams, which set the tone for a cool, even growing season…

Gabriëlskloof Range

This vintage of Rosebud was made with 100% Syrah that was whole bunch pressed and fermented and spent a couple of months settling in tank before blending and bottling. Bright red fruits like pomegranate and wild strawberry lead on the nose, before more savoury elements of tomato leaf and flint. The palate is fresh and textured…

Landscape Series

The Syrah on Sandstone site is mountainous and made up of broken Sandstone, making it incredibly tough for vineyards to grow. This merciless environment leads to natural low vigour and minimal yields, resulting in a complex, unique wine. Although looking strong and happy, our sandstone…

Landscape Series

The Landscape Series is a range of five wines that show the best of Gabriëlskloof’s vineyards, together with some special old vine treasures, and aims to give an honest representation of the elements that make them unique. We wanted the labels to reflect this approach and commissioned Niël Jonker…

Landscape Series

All fruit was whole bunch pressed and 100% wild fermented in 400- and 500L French barrels. The wine spent ten months on its lees before blending and bottling. Bruised apples, thatch and chamomile are prominent on a richly exotic nose, supported by ginger and thai basil. Flavours of yellow pear, lemon drop…

Projects Range

Our cheeky little bubbly, Madame Lucy, is perfectly groomed and made according to the traditional Methode Cap Classique with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, second ferment in bottle, and nine months minimum on the lees. The grapes were whole bunch pressed. After fermentation, the wine was left…

Projects Range

The Whole Bunch Syrah forms part of our Projects Range. These are wines we can get geeky about – interesting, small runs, slightly quirky. This vintage of the Whole Bunch Syrah is floral, earthy and intensely complex, showing a dense core of black and red fruits and white pepper that again nods towards the northern Rhone…

Projects Range

Whole bunch pressed and 100% wild fermented in clay amphorae. Aged for seven months on gross lees without any additions, with minimal SO2 additions just before bottling. Locally made, these amphorae have been developed over ten years of trial and error. Ranging in sizes – between 500L and 860L…
