Hattingley Valley

New Alresford, United Kingdom

Since its humble beginnings as a farm diversification project in 2008, Hattingley Valley has emerged as one of the leading wineries in the UK, nestled in the picturesque countryside of Hampshire. What started as a small vineyard on the Robinson family’s farmland has blossomed into a thriving enterprise, boasting a state-of-the-art, eco-friendly winery that is the envy of the industry.

Under the guidance of the then Head Winemaker, Emma Rice, the winery was purpose-built to exacting standards. Emma, recognizing the potential and armed with Simon’s enthusiasm, ensured that only the best equipment found its place within the winery’s walls. Today, Hattingley Valley boasts one of the most advanced wineries in the world, a testament to their commitment to quality and innovation. Today, the vineyard is skillfully managed by Rob MacCulloch, a highly accomplished Master of Wine.

Rather than relying solely on their own vineyards in Hampshire, Hattingley Valley has always sourced fruit from a diverse range of regions across England. Despite its relatively small size, England offers a wealth of soil types and microclimates, each contributing its unique character to the wines. This approach allows Hattingley Valley to spread the risk of frost—a significant concern in the region—across different areas, ensuring the availability of high-quality fruit.

Over the years, Hattingley Valley has forged partnerships with established farmers who either had existing vineyards or sought to diversify their farming practices. Growing grapes successfully in the UK is a challenging endeavor, so Hattingley Valley selects sites with true potential. These long-term contracts, often spanning a minimum of ten years, ensure the viability of these partnerships and contribute to the overall success of the winery.

Adhering to the timeless adage that “you can make bad wine from good grapes, but it is impossible to make good wine from bad grapes,” Hattingley Valley relentlessly pursues excellence by working exclusively with the finest fruit available. Their unwavering dedication ensures that each bottle of Hattingley Valley wine represents the pinnacle of quality and craftsmanship.

Prior to establishing their vineyards, Simon Robinson commissioned a survey of the flora and fauna on his Hampshire farm. This survey revealed the presence of the Silver-washed Fritillary Butterfly, a rarity in Britain but a common sight in Europe. The vineyards at Hattingley Valley, with their south-facing chalk-based slopes, provide a healthy environment with rich biodiversity. The winery takes great pride in nurturing this delicate ecosystem, as evidenced by its commitment to environmental stewardship and the preservation of the surrounding farmlands.

Creating premium, traditional method sparkling wine is a patient endeavor. Their inaugural release, the 2011 Rosé, earned them great recognition as it clinched the coveted gold medal at the esteemed 2014 Decanter awards. Continuing its exceptional journey, this remarkable wine not only secured the gold medal but also garnered the prestigious Best in Class accolade and a coveted Trophy at the acclaimed 2014 Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships. This achievement affirmed the wisdom of their patient approach and set the stage for the remarkable wines that would follow.

With each bottle of Hattingley Valley wine, you embark on a sensory journey. The meticulous craftsmanship, commitment to sustainability, and reverence for nature converge, resulting in exquisite sparkling wines that capture the essence of Hampshire’s terroir. Hattingley Valley continues to redefine the perception of English wine, earning its rightful place among the world’s finest producers and leaving a lasting impression on wine enthusiasts near and far.
