Champagne Henriet-Bazin
Reims, France
The history of the esteemed estate of Champagne Henriet-Bazin dates back to 1890 when Gaston Henriet, the great-grandfather of the current generation, embarked on an extraordinary wine-making endeavor. Prior to this pivotal moment, Gaston had been selling his harvest to prominent Champagne houses. However, a burning desire to explore the world of winemaking led him to set aside a portion of the harvest for his own venture.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Robert Henriet assumed leadership in 1930 and further expanded the family’s wine business. Driven by an unwavering passion for Champagne de Vignerons, Robert dedicated himself to building a loyal clientele, participating in fairs held in Paris, Lille, and Lyon. The year 1962 marked a turning point when Daniel Henriet, the grandson of the founder, made the momentous decision to embrace the family legacy. At the age of 16, Daniel embarked on a journey to study the art of winemaking, subsequently joining his brothers on the family estate. It was during this time that he met Mademoiselle Micheline Bazin, the daughter of esteemed winegrowers from Villers-Marmery. In 1968, Daniel and Micheline’s union united two wine families, giving rise to Champagne Henriet-Bazin.

Although the next generation was yet to make their mark, the family’s commitment to winemaking remained unwavering. In 1991, the torch was passed to the current generation as they enthusiastically joined the family enterprise. A momentous decision was made – to retain the entire harvest for vinification, a testament to their unwavering dedication to producing exceptional wines. Just three years later, fate smiled upon them, presenting the opportunity to acquire 1.75 hectares of Meunier from Faverolles and Coëmy, thus expanding the range of grape varieties cultivated on their estate.
Guided by an equal love for wine and nature, the family made a resolute commitment in the early 2000s to surpass the principles of Viticulture Raisonnée established by the previous generation. Their philosophy was simple yet profound: respect. Respect for nature, the land, the vines, the wines, and, most importantly, their customers. This respect began with attentive listening, and over the course of 15 years, they honed their ability to interpret nature’s subtle whispers, deepening their understanding of the vineyard ecosystem.

The family’s profound commitment to sustainability and harmony with nature led them to abandon the use of weedkillers and embrace the delicate balance of insects within their vineyards. They adopted practices such as grassing between the rows of vines and sowing carefully selected plants to replace fertilizers. Furthermore, their work became intimately connected with the lunar cycles, synchronizing their activities with nature’s rhythms. These transformative changes revitalized the life cycle within their vineyards. The soil became more vibrant, lighter, and enriched with oxygen, profoundly impacting the behavior of the vine roots. Deeper root systems resulted in improved hydration and nutrition for the vines, ultimately transforming the flavor profile of their grapes and, consequently, their wines.

Today, Champagne Henriet-Bazin employs precise, plot-based vinification techniques, allowing each distinct vineyard site, or “lieu-dit,” to tell its own story through the wines it produces. This meticulous approach enables the wines to eloquently express the terroir from which they originate. Every bottle that bears the Henriet-Bazin label is a testament to the unwavering commitment of the family, who passionately preserve their heritage and perpetuate the legacy of Champagne Henriet-Bazin. Their wines embody the harmonious marriage of passion and respect, delivering an exquisite sensory experience that speaks volumes about their devotion to the craft of winemaking.
