Domaine Paul Mas
Montpellier, France
The story of Domaines Paul Mas begins in the charming town of Pézenas, known as the city of the famous playwright Molière. Nestled in the Conas hamlet, Château Paul Mas serves as the starting point for this remarkable journey. From there, the estates expanded to include Nicole vineyard and Mas des Tannes in Montagnac, Domaine Astruc in Malras near Limoux, Château Arrogant Frog in Gaja et Villedieu, and Château Crès Ricards in Ceyras.
The family’s winemaking heritage can be traced back to Jean-Claude Mas’s great-grandfather, Auguste Mas, who acquired the first family vineyard in 1892. With 9 hectares (22 acres) of vines in the Mas de Bicq near the village of St Pons de Mauschiens, close to Montagnac, the foundation was laid.
.
In 1934, Raymond Mas expanded the family vineyard to 15 hectares in Domaine Montredon, located in Montagnac. The vineyard continued to flourish under the stewardship of Paul Mas, who, together with his brother Maxime Mas, expanded it to an impressive 120 hectares (296 acres) in 1954.
In 1987, Paul Mas passed on 35 hectares to his son, Jean-Claude, who would go on to establish Domaines Paul Mas 13 years later. The historical cradle of Domaines Paul Mas is the Conas hamlet in Pézenas, where the renowned Château Paul Mas is located.
.
Situated on the Ile de Conas Estate, the castle boasts a history spanning over a thousand years. In 1792, Domaine de Conas was divided and sold at auction, with only the château, the mill, and 27 hectares (66 acres) remaining. These properties became the ownership of Raymond Mas, Jean-Claude’s grandfather, in 1954.
Today, Domaines Paul Mas encompasses approximately 850 hectares of wine country in the heart of the Languedoc region. As a flagship of the Sud de France brand, the wines produced by Domaines Paul Mas showcase the richness and diversity of the region. With over 850 hectares of vines on their own estates, of which 30% are organic, and an additional 1,500 hectares at contracted partner vineyards, the winery has access to a wide array of grape varieties. In total, they can blend with around 45 different native and noble grape varieties from diverse Languedoc terroirs.
.
The unique geography of the Languedoc region plays a significant role in the diversity found in Domaines Paul Mas wines. Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the south and mountains to the north, the region’s geological formation adds to its distinct character. This combination of factors allows Domaines Paul Mas to produce exceptional wines that capture the essence of the Languedoc terroir.
Through generations of winemaking expertise and a commitment to quality, Domaines Paul Mas has become a renowned name in the world of wine. With their extensive vineyard holdings, diverse grape varieties, and dedication to sustainability, they continue to create wines that reflect the richness and unique flavors of the Languedoc region.
