Domaine Joseph Mellot
Sancerre, France
With a history that spans over 500 years, Domaine Joseph Mellot stands as an emblem of winemaking excellence in Sancerre, France. The story of this prestigious winery began in 1513 when Pierre Etienne Mellot wrote the first page of the family’s winemaking journey. Fast forward to the reign of Louis XIV, and César Mellot’s expertise in wine had earned them the esteemed position of being the king’s wine advisors. This recognition solidified their status as the symbol of Sancerre.
In 1882, the family took a significant step forward by establishing the Auberge Joseph Mellot, the first restaurant in Sancerre. This move marked the beginnings of what would later be known as wine tourism. Renowned guests, including Claude Monet and Marshal Juin, frequented the establishment, further enhancing its reputation. In 1920, Alphonse Mellot, the first Sancerre winemaker, exhibited his wines at the Foire de Paris, where he won numerous medals. He later opened a depot in the halle aux vins de Bercy to expand sales in the capital city. After his tenure, his two sons, Joseph and Edmond, succeeded him at the estate in 1946, carrying on the family legacy.

In 1969, Edmond and Joseph split up. The family vineyards were divided and two MELLOT companies created. Joseph took over the historical winery which was renamed JOSEPH MELLOT. In 1984, Alexandre, Joseph’s son, took over and developed the Joseph MELLOT Estate with great commitment. He was one of the first to believe in the strong potential of the Sancerre and Centre-Loire wines. He expanded the vineyard, modernized the production facilities and gave a new boost to export sales. In 1987, he was joined by Catherine CORBEAU-MELLOT, his wife, who assumed the responsibility of Sales and Communication.
In 2005, Alexandre Mellot passed away, he was only 44. Naturally, Catherine took over. In 2007, Catherine Mellot received the prestigious “Chevalier de l’Ordre du Mérite Agricole” title from the French Ministry of Agriculture, recognizing her contributions to the agricultural sector. Additionally, the estate obtained the British Retail Consortium (BRC) certification, a benchmark that evaluates the compliance of food-related businesses.

Taking environmental responsibility seriously, Domaine Joseph Mellot became the first winery in the region to achieve ISO 14001 certification in 2009. This international standard focuses on continuous improvement of environmental performance. The estate’s dedication to sustainable practices continued with the qualification of Agriculture Raisonnée in 2010.
All of the estates under Domaine Joseph Mellot have received the High Environmental Value (HVE) certification. This voluntary approach centers around four crucial environmental aspects: biodiversity protection, phytosanitary strategy, fertilization management, and water resources management. By adhering to these principles, the winery demonstrates its commitment to preserving the environment.
.
.
One particular estate, Domaine des Émois, has taken sustainability a step further by obtaining organic certification. This achievement highlights the estate’s impeccable adherence to strict specifications, including limited use of sulphites and the complete elimination of synthetic products, herbicides, insecticides, and GMOs. Moreover, the implementation of rigorous computer monitoring ensures complete traceability of production across all of Maison Joseph Mellot’s estates.
Domaine Joseph Mellot’s rich history and unwavering dedication to quality and sustainability make it a trailblazer in the Sancerre winemaking region. With each passing generation, the Mellot family has upheld its reputation as an emblem of excellence, combining traditional winemaking practices with innovative approaches to ensure the continued success of their wines.
