Domaine Clos de la Chapelle

Bligny-lès-Beaune, France

Nearly 150 years ago, Victor Boillot laid the foundation for a beautiful small domaine encompassing three 1er Cru parcels. This remarkable property was later passed down to Louis Boillot, the final member of his family to possess it. However, in 2011, the historic estate found new owners who renamed it Domaine Clos de la Chapelle, paying homage to its flagship monopole.

The centerpiece of this domaine is the exquisite monopole vineyard known as Clos de la Chapelle. This vineyard holds a rich and colorful history closely intertwined with the story of the picturesque chapel that shares its name, as well as the historic village of Volnay, which was once the residence of the esteemed Dukes of Burgundy. Situated across the lane from the chapel, Clos de la Chapelle lies beneath the ancient walls of the former château of the Dukes of Burgundy. Its association with the Notre Dame de Pitié dates back to 1540 when the spacious Gothic chapel was constructed, and the vineyard was dedicated to the revered Notre Dame de Pitié.

Originally part of the Bousse d’Or, the Clos de la Chapelle only acquired its current name in 1937. During the establishment of appellations, the National Institute of the Origin and the Quality initially referred to the vineyard as Clos des Ducs under the village denomination. Enclosed by walls and facing the chapel’s entrance, this unique plot of land stood side-by-side with the Bousse d’Or.

.

.

Over time, the ownership of Clos de la Chapelle changed due to the revolution and the subsequent nationalization of ecclesiastical lands. The Pinard family eventually acquired the separate parcels, which were later reunited by Victor Boillot. It is worth noting that the renowned scientist Louis Pasteur himself requested numerous wine samples from Victor Boillot to aid his research on wine diseases. Pasteur’s correspondence with Boillot sheds light on his findings regarding the effects of heating on wine preservation during transportation.

Under the stewardship of Domaine Clos de la Chapelle, the property now comprises eleven distinct terroirs, encompassing a total of 4 hectares of planted vineyards. The estate’s primary focus lies in achieving the purest wines possible, and as such, all the vineyards are in the process of transitioning to organic and biodynamic practices. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested, and minimal intervention is employed during vinification, in line with the Burgundian tradition.

The Domaine Clos de la Chapelle offers a range of exceptional wines, including Volnay 1er Cru, Pommard 1er Cru, Beaune 1er Cru, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru, and Corton Grand Cru. Furthermore, the domaine invites wine enthusiasts to join their exclusive private club (only available for U.S. based customers), granting members access to two wine collection releases per year, in June and October, ensuring a delightful selection of their finest wines delivered straight to their doorsteps.
