Domaine André Brunel - Les Cailloux

Sorgues, France

For centuries, the André Brunel family has been deeply rooted in the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape region, pouring their heart and soul into the art of winemaking. Since the 17th century, their commitment to crafting exceptional wines has been evident, starting with the acquisition of a vineyard plot from the Bishop of Avignon to the north of the appellation.

Generations of the Brunel family followed suit, dedicating themselves to the vineyards and perpetuating their winemaking heritage. However, it was in 1954 when Lucien Brunel, recognizing the immense potential of their wines, decided to breathe new life into the business by creating the name “Les Cailloux.” This new branding aimed to showcase the unique qualities and characteristics of their Domaine’s wines. From that point forward, the estate became affectionately known as Domaine Les Cailloux.

In 1971, André Brunel assumed the reins of the Domaine, propelling it towards rapid growth. With relentless motivation, he embarked on a journey that involved repurchasing Côtes du Rhône and Vins de Pays vineyards, expanding the reach and influence of the estate. Notably, in 1989, André introduced the infamous Centenary Cuvée, a testament to his unwavering pursuit of excellence. Moreover, he made significant advancements in vine management by being among the first in Châteauneuf-du-Pape to adopt ground covering methods and embrace a non-chemical approach to winemaking.

In 2012, the legacy continued as Fabrice Brunel, André’s son, joined the family team, ensuring the continuation of their winemaking history.

Domaine André Brunel encompasses three esteemed appellations: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes du Rhône, and Vaucluse Vins de Pays. Regardless of the appellation, their dedication to quality and profound respect for the land remain unwavering. Every step of the winemaking process is meticulously executed, driven by their unyielding pursuit of producing wines that reflect their regional and varietal origins while exuding elegance and finesse.

The maturing times differentiate their wines, with Châteauneuf-du-Pape requiring longer aging for optimal development, while Vins de Pays are crafted to be enjoyed earlier. Furthermore, the usage of vats varies, with Syrahs in Châteauneuf-du-Pape benefitting from vat maturation to soften the tannins, while Côtes du Rhône and Vins de Pays preserve the fruit’s freshness without vat influence.

.

.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines are renowned for their blends, allowing the use of multiple grape varieties. According to the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC decree, 13 grape varieties are permitted—eight red varieties (Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Counoise, Muscadin, Vaccarèse, and Terret) and five white varieties (Roussanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, and Picardan). Additionally, other varieties such as Viognier or Marsanne find their place in the Côtes du Rhône appellation.

At Domaine André Brunel, their unwavering commitment to quality and respect for tradition shine through in every bottle. Each sip reveals the essence of the Rhône Valley and the unique terroir that shapes their exceptional wines. With each vintage, they continue to etch their name in the illustrious history of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, crafting wines that captivate the senses and tell a story of passion, heritage, and excellence.
