Bodegas Vi Rei

Llucmajor, Spain

The region of Llucmajor in Mallorca, with its rich historical heritage and favorable conditions, has long been associated with wine production. From the ancient Talaiots and settlements like Capocorb Vell to the Roman vineyards, this area holds a significant place in the island’s winemaking history. In the times of the Roman Empire, the wines of the Balearic Islands, including Mallorca, were highly regarded. Pliny the Elder, in his renowned work “Historia Natural,” praised the quality of these wines. However, it was the conquest of Mallorca by King Jaume I in the 13th century that marked a turning point for winemaking on the island.

Unfortunately, the flourishing wine industry in Mallorca faced a setback in the 19th century with the arrival of the Phylloxera plague from mainland Europe. This devastating disease caused widespread destruction and led to a sharp decline in wine production on the island. In the early 21st century, a visionary named Miguel Pascual, driven by his passion for wine and deep-rooted knowledge, took the initiative to revive and revitalize the winemaking sector in the Llucmajor region. He planted a new vineyard on the estate of Sa Bassa Plana, recognizing its unique potential near the sea.

.

Bodegas Vi Rei, led by the experienced Ignacio de Miguel, is responsible for crafting exceptional wines that reflect the true essence of Mallorca. With a wealth of expertise gained through collaborations with renowned winemakers like Michel Rolland and Carlos Falco, Ignacio de Miguel creates authentic wines with strong personalities.

In his winemaking process, Ignacio de Miguel adheres to seven essential rules. These include harvesting the grapes at the perfect time to ensure optimum maturity, gentle extraction during vinification, careful fermentation to preserve character, selecting specific barrels for desired results, meticulous monitoring of the aging process, prioritizing quality and character during blending, and maintaining an open-minded approach.

.

The vineyard, mostly planted in 2012, spans 85 hectares and boasts a diverse range of indigenous and international grape varieties. Premsal Blanc, Giro Ros, Mantonegro, Callet, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Malvasia, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon all thrive in the region’s Mediterranean climate. Mild winters and hot, dry summers provide ideal conditions for grape growth and contribute to the distinctive terroir character of the wines.

The proximity of the sea plays a significant role in the microclimate found near Llucmajor. With an average annual rainfall of 400-450 millimeters and over 2,800 hours of sunshine each year, the climate is ideal for viticulture. The limestone and clay composition of the soil, with its slightly alkaline acidity, promotes good drainage and facilitates the growth of healthy vine roots.

.

The winery itself was designed with a clear focus on producing high-quality wines while incorporating the latest technological advancements in winemaking processes. From low-extraction presses that yield high-quality must to stainless steel tanks for controlled-temperature fermentation, every step is meticulously executed to enhance the wines’ aroma and color. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, and further maturation occurs in the bottle, completing the production cycle. Each wine is limited in production and uniquely numbered.

Bodegas Vi Rei stands as a testament to the rich winemaking heritage of Llucmajor, offering wine enthusiasts an opportunity to savor the distinctive flavors and character of Mallorcan wines. With a commitment to quality and a passion for authenticity, the winery continues to contribute to the legacy of winemaking in the region.
