Dry Creek Vineyard

California, United States

Dry Creek Vineyard has a rich history that began with founder David S. Stare’s passion for wine and his determination to create world-class wines in California. After completing his education, including a degree in Civil Engineering and an MBA, David moved to Germany, where his interest in wine was sparked by visits to local wineries. Upon returning to the United States, he embarked on a journey that would shape the future of Dry Creek Vineyard.

In 1970, a trip to France left a lasting impression on David, particularly the wines of the Loire Valley and Bordeaux. Inspired by an article in the Wall Street Journal highlighting California’s potential in winemaking, David made the decision to establish his own winery in the state. With his wife and children, he set out to find the perfect location.

During his exploration of vineyard lands from Monterey to Mendocino, fate led David to the Dry Creek Valley area of Sonoma County. Drawn to a rundown prune orchard across from the Dry Creek General Store, he recognized it as the ideal spot for his winemaking venture. David purchased the orchard and took the bold step of planting Sauvignon Blanc, despite expert advice to the contrary.

This pioneering decision marked a turning point for viticulture in northern Sonoma County and ignited a reawakening in the region. David’s dedication and vision established Dry Creek Vineyard as the first new winery in the area following Prohibition.

David’s daughter, Kim Stare Wallace, grew up among the vines of Dry Creek Valley. Witnessing her father’s commitment to quality and his passion for the region, Kim became deeply involved in the winery’s operations alongside her husband, Don. The second generation embraced a “no compromises” philosophy, ensuring the production of appellation-focused, varietal-defining wines.

Today, Dry Creek Vineyard remains a private, family-owned winery, dedicated to crafting exceptional wines. Their commitment to sustainability is reflected in their 100% certified sustainable practices. With a focus on estate-grown grapes and partnerships with local family farms, Dry Creek Vineyard consistently produces wines that earn 90+ point ratings.

The winery’s unwavering commitment to quality, combined with their love for the land and their customers, sets them apart in an industry that often succumbs to corporate ownership. Dry Creek Vineyard proudly wears their heart on their labels, infusing each bottle with passion and care.

For over 50 years, Dry Creek Vineyard has continued to push boundaries, consistently raising the bar in winemaking and vineyard management. Their legacy of excellence, unwavering commitment to family values, and dedication to their craft make Dry Creek Vineyard a true icon in Sonoma County.

In a world of shortcuts, Dry Creek Vineyard goes the extra mile to create wines that capture the essence of their home region. From vine to bottle, they remain true to their vision, ensuring that their wines, vineyards, and customers are cared for with the utmost attention and passion.
