In 1982, Fred Cline embarked on a remarkable journey, founding Cline Family Cellars in Oakley, California. His initial vintages were crafted from historic plantings of Mourvèdre, Zinfandel, and Carignane, some of which dated back to the late 1800s. However, it was in 1989 that Fred and his wife Nancy made a pivotal decision, purchasing a sprawling 350-acre horse farm in Sonoma-Carneros and relocating the winery there. It was in this picturesque setting that their seven children were raised, surrounded by vineyards and the beauty of winemaking.

Fred Cline, a pioneering member of the Rhone Rangers, soon set his sights on planting vineyards dedicated to Rhone varieties. Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne found a new home in Sonoma County, as the family expanded their viticultural pursuits. Over the years, they continued to add vineyards throughout the region, incorporating classic varieties like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay into their portfolio.
