Cline Family Cellars

Sonoma, CA, USA

In 1982, Fred Cline embarked on a remarkable journey, founding Cline Family Cellars in Oakley, California. His initial vintages were crafted from historic plantings of Mourvèdre, Zinfandel, and Carignane, some of which dated back to the late 1800s. However, it was in 1989 that Fred and his wife Nancy made a pivotal decision, purchasing a sprawling 350-acre horse farm in Sonoma-Carneros and relocating the winery there. It was in this picturesque setting that their seven children were raised, surrounded by vineyards and the beauty of winemaking.

Fred Cline, a pioneering member of the Rhone Rangers, soon set his sights on planting vineyards dedicated to Rhone varieties. Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne found a new home in Sonoma County, as the family expanded their viticultural pursuits. Over the years, they continued to add vineyards throughout the region, incorporating classic varieties like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay into their portfolio.

As children, the Cline siblings often found themselves immersed in the vineyards, enjoying a safe and nurturing environment provided by their parents. The Clines were committed to ensuring the well-being of their family and the land they cultivated. It was paramount to them that pesticides and herbicides were not used in grape cultivation. Thus, they embraced sustainable farming practices, implementing cover crops and compost teas to nourish the soil. Additionally, they introduced sheep to control weeds, fostering healthy vines for future generations.

Cline Family Cellars holds the esteemed distinction of being Certified California Sustainable and Sonoma County Sustainable. This recognition acknowledges their unwavering dedication to sustainable viticulture and winemaking practices. For four decades, the Cline family has carefully tended to their vineyards, cultivating a deep understanding of the land and its potential. Guided by their star winemakers, Tom Gendall and Katie Hoggins, Cline Family Cellars produces a range of stylish noble varietals, with a particular focus on Rhone and Zinfandel wines.

.

.

Gendall and Hoggins embody the belief that the finest wines are born from sustainably farmed vineyards, where minimal intervention is required in the cellar. They adopt a hands-off approach, utilizing wild yeast for fermentation and allowing the grapes’ inherent colors, aromas, flavors, and textures to shine through. The result is a collection of wines that express the true essence of the grapes and the land from which they originate.

Furthermore, Cline Family Cellars proudly caters to individuals with specific dietary preferences. All their wines are vegan and gluten-free, ensuring that everyone can savor and enjoy their exceptional creations.

.

.

With each bottle of Cline Family Cellars wine, a legacy of sustainable winemaking and a deep-rooted passion for the land are celebrated. From the historic vines to the scenic vineyards that span Sonoma County, their commitment to crafting outstanding wines is unwavering.

As they continue to carry the torch of sustainability and excellence, Cline Family Cellars invites wine lovers to join them on this remarkable journey, where each sip tells a story of a harmonious relationship between the land, the vines, and the art of winemaking.
