Chateau Mouton Rothschild

Wine Leaders' Choice

Pauillac, France

Château Brane-Mouton has a rich history, with Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquiring the estate in 1853. However, it was his great-grandson Philippe who truly left his mark on the estate when he took over in 1922. Philippe was a true Renaissance man, with talents ranging from race car driving to film producing. Under his leadership, Château Mouton Rothschild was upgraded to First Growth status in 1973, and he created landmark art collections that are still evolving today. Today, the estate is run by Philippe’s three grandchildren, and it is very much a part of modern Bordeaux.

The estate produces red Bordeaux blends made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, as well as a second line of younger wines at more approachable price points called ‘Le Petit Mouton.’ Their ‘Aile d’Argent’ white blends are dominated by Sauvignon Blanc.

Guests to Château Mouton Rothschild can view the artwork that has decorated their bottles since 1945. In an initiative started in 1922, Baron Philippe commissioned an artist to create the label for each new vintage. The museum space doesn’t just exhibit these momentous labels, but the sketches and preliminary works leading up to them, for a privileged glimpse into the artistic process.

The winery itself is a sight to behold, with a 100-meter long barrel hall built in 1926 and a more modern vat room featuring the latest gravity-based technology. The estate’s wines are muscular with a hint of spice, making them some of the finest wines in Bordeaux.
