Château Moncets & Château de Chambrun
Néac, France
Nestled in the heart of France’s prestigious wine country, Château Moncets and Château de Chambrun represent a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. With roots stretching back over centuries, these estates have embarked on a journey of transformation, embracing the challenges of modern viticulture while preserving the essence of their terroir. As pioneers in the adaptation to climate change and organic farming, they stand at the forefront of a new generation of winemakers in Bordeaux.
.
Embracing Change for a Sustainable Future
Since 2012, the teams behind Château Moncets and Château de Chambrun have been dedicated to adapting their practices in response to global warming, ensuring the longevity and vitality of their vineyards. Their commitment to sustainability took a significant leap forward in 2018 when they transitioned to organic farming—a decision rooted in respect for the land, people, and the future of viticulture.
Spanning 37 hectares across two appellations, Lalande de Pomerol and Montagne Saint Emilion, these vineyards are a testament to the power of regeneration. The focus on biodiversity, community, and sharing the beauty of French winemaking has reinvigorated these historic estates, setting a new standard for the industry.
.
A Rich Heritage Reimagined
Château de Chambrun, with its origins dating back to 1775, and Château Moncets, established in 1770, boast a storied history. The latter, named after Général de Moncets who acquired it in 1872, underwent significant renovation and revitalization in 2012 under new ownership. This revival has not only preserved the estates’ legacy but also introduced a fresh, fruitier style of wine production, complemented by a modernized packaging design.
With 21 parcels located on dark clay, Château Moncets showcases the diversity of its terroir, optimized for Merlot and Cabernet Franc grape varieties. The strategic intra-plot selection reflects the estate’s dedication to quality and the unique character of its wines.
Château de Chambrun’s journey has been equally transformative. Known initially as “Clos de Chambrun,” this flagship vineyard has undergone extensive revitalization since 2015, maintaining its historic symbol, the Templars’ Cross, while ushering in a new era of winemaking excellence.
Innovative Viticulture and Winemaking
The adoption of modern viticultural techniques and continuous improvements to winemaking facilities underline the estates’ proactive approach to environmental challenges. Collaboration with renowned oenologists, such as Michel Rolland and Thomas Duclos, has further enhanced the quality of their wines, marrying traditional wisdom with contemporary science.
The commitment to environmental stewardship extends beyond the vineyards. Initiatives like the establishment of an educational farm, the creation of a biodiversity-boosting pond, and the integration of beehives and eco-pastures demonstrate a holistic approach to sustainability.
.
A Destination for Wine Lovers
The allure of Château Moncets and Château de Chambrun is not limited to their wines. These estates are part of Bordeaux’s vibrant wine tourism scene, offering visitors a glimpse into the region’s rich culinary heritage and stunning landscapes. With the upcoming opening of reception rooms for events and seminars in 2023, the estates are poised to become even more integral to the cultural and social fabric of Bordeaux.
As Château Moncets and Château de Chambrun continue to evolve, they remain deeply rooted in the tradition and terroir that have defined Bordeaux wines for centuries. Through innovation, sustainability, and a commitment to excellence, these vineyards are not only preserving their legacy but also shaping the future of French winemaking.
